Join us for an Evening of history with the History Girls!

On Thursday, June 30th at 6 PM join bestselling historical fiction and nonfiction authors Sally Gunning, Theresa Barbo, Nancy Rubin Stuart and Deborah Swiss for a fascinating moderated panel discussion and Q&A, followed by a reception featuring historic food and drink. In addition, historic documents and materials from the Sturgis Library archives will be on display during the event.

The authors will talk about the creative process of writing historical fiction and nonfiction and answer questions from the moderator, followed by audience discussion. Historic foods and drink will be served. Books will be available for sale by Titcomb's and the authors will be signing their books.

Sally Cabot Gunning is the author of the Satucket series of historical novels set in part on Cape Cod, as well Benjamin's Franklin's Bastard.  Her newest novel Monticello, about Thomas Jefferson, will be published in the fall.

Theresa Mitchell Barbo is the author of numerous books about Cape Cod history, including The Pendleton Distaster off Cape Cod in both a regular nonfiction version and one written for young people.

Nancy Rubin Stuart is the author of Muse of the Revolution: The Secret Pen of Mercy Otis Warren and the Founding of a Nation, Defiant Brides: The Untold Story of Two Revolutionary-Era Women and the Radical Men They Married, and numerous other books.

Deborah Swiss is an author, speaker, and consultant with a specialty in women's history, gender equity, and work/life balance. Her latest book, The Tin Ticket: The Heroic Journey of Australia's Convict Women, tells the heartbreaking, horrifying, and ultimately triumphant story of the women exiled from the British Isles and forced into slavery and savagery-who created the most liberated society of their time.

Tickets are $30 in advance (or $40 at the door if not sold out).  We encourage you to buy your tickets early as space is limited.  Purchase tickets in advance in person at Sturgis Library or by calling us at 508-362-6636 with your credit card information.  Tickets are going fast so get yours now!

Author Talk & Reading
Come hear author Steve Sheppard talk about and read from his novel, Tourist Town: A Nantucket Idyll.
Tuesday July 26, 2016
6:30 pm

A woman awakes on Nantucket Island, not knowing where she is - or who she is - and she doesn't want to find out. She calls herself 'Verona,' a name borrowed from the stern of the first boat she sees - a name she hopes will help scuttle her past. Sheppard's novel follows Verona as she encounters the daughter of a lighthouse keeper and becomes entangled in a decades-old tragedy.

For eight years Steve Sheppard was editor of Nantucket Magazine, a respected quarterly dedicated to the history, people, and culture of the island. He was also an editor and reporter for the Inquirer and Mirror and Nantucket Independent, and a reporter for the Patriot Ledger of Quincy, MA. He has written for the Boston Globe, Philadelphia Inquirer, Providence Journal, Cape Cod Life, and Sanctuary magazine (the award-winning journal of Mass Audubon) among other publications. He lives on Nantucket.

Kudos To Our Staff

State certifications and special honors awarded to Sturgis Library staff

award-banner.gif Several members of the Sturgis Library staff were recognized for their achievements at the Massachusetts Library Association (MLA) annual conference, which was held in Hyannis in May.  Each received a Paralibrarian Recognition of Achievement (PARA) Certificate: Circulation Assistants Katherine Tolliver-Level 1,
Lisa Conway-Level 2, Cathy Pastva-Level 2, Cataloger Magdalena Brancato-Level 2,  and Assistant Director Karen Horn-Level 4.

This a voluntary program with 4 levels of achievement is designed to recognize the involvement and contributions of paralibrarians (library support staff) who continue to increase their knowledge and skill-set through participation in workshops, conferences, continuing education, committee involvement, cross-training and writing.   This certification is an official recognition in the state of Massachusetts.

In addition, Karen Horn received the MA Library Support Staff Advocate of the Year award for her work on behalf of paralibrarians in Massachusetts and the New England region.  Karen has advocated extensively for the professional advancement of non-degreed librarians and support staff throughout her career.  This past year she designed and implemented a self-directed, bite-size learning program at Sturgis Library and was invited to speak at the annual conference where she highlighted the benefits of this approach and encouraged library directors across the state to offer similar programs for their staff.

Did you know that you can get discounted admission to many of the museums on the Cape?  There are even passes available for  museums as far away as New Bedford, Providence and Boston.

All you need is a CLAMS library card to check out one of these museum passes.  Unlike books and movies, museum passes must be picked up and returned to the library from which you borrow the pass.  Some of these passes are quite popular so you are encouraged to call ahead to reserve a pass for a specific day.

The following passes are available from Sturgis Library: Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Cahoon Museum of Art, Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, Heritage Museum and Gardens, MA State Parks Pass, New Bedford Whaling Museum, Plimouth Plantation, Roger Williams Zoo, and the USS Constitution.
