Seed Library and Milkweed for Monarchs
|
|

Stop by the Sturgis Seed Lending Library and get your seeds for spring planting. Vegetables, fruits, flowers and herb seeds are all available. The seeds have been saved by local gardeners and packaged and labeled by the Cape Cod Food Hub.
Seeds can be taken for free, and we encourage you to save seeds at the end of the season to donate back to the seed library. Also available are milkweed seeds for a donation of $2.00 per package. Sturgis Library has partnered with Long Pasture Audubon Sanctuary and the Cape Cod Food Hub to make the seeds available for planting in your yard or garden. Milkweed attracts monarch butterflies, whose populations have plummeted in the last few years to dangerous levels. By planting milkweed you are helping to support the local monarch population. Your donations help support monarch education at Long Pasture.
Have you heard about the Grow and Give program cosponsored by Barnstable County, the Cooperative Extension Service and the YMCA? The program encourages gardeners to grow a little extra in their vegetable gardens to donate to local food pantries. Fresh, locally grown food is in short supply at the pantries. MAY 1, 2016 THANATOURISM with Greg Williams
What exactly IS thanatourism, you ask? According to our traveler/speaker, it is earthquakes in California; millions of skulls in the catacombs, Buddy Holly in Iowa and Lizzie Borden in Fall River. Cemeteries and the burial wishes of the Renaissance painter who gave us the birth of Venus and Spring. Dark tourism, done lightly. Oh....and the cats that guard Caesar's ghost.

Wolf Hollow Book Release, Author Reading/Signing & Poetry Art
Tuesday, May 17th from 6-7:30
| Come meet local author Lauren Wolk and enjoy a reading from her debut novel told with the quiet strength and emotional depth of a new classic. Wolf Hollow is inspired by the entwined roots of Lauren's own family history and memories formed on a farm gifted to her ancestor for his service in the Revolutionary War. "The honesty of Wolf Hollow will just about shred your heart, but Annabelle's courage and compassion will restore it to you, fuller than before. This book matters." -Sara Pennypacker, New York Times bestselling author of Pax.
Purchase a book, have it signed by Lauren and enjoy a found poetry art workshop. This is a free drop-in event and all ages are welcome but this book is intended for middle grades through YA.
Lauren is an award-winning poet and novelist (Those Who Favor Fire, Random House, 1999). Her second novel, Forgiving Billy, was twice nominated for the Pushcart Editor's Book Award and won the Hackney Award. Her third work, Wolf Hollow, will be published by Penguin Random House in May 2016.
