Milkweed for Monarchs

Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary and Sturgis Library Partner to Help Monarch Butterflies in Need

Monarch butterflies are some of nature's most resilient, yet fragile, creatures. This autumn, Mass Audubon's Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary, Sturgis Library and the Cape Cod Food Hub have embarked on a joint program to bolster monarch populations by distributing milkweed seeds. Monarchs feed exclusively on milkweed during their early life stages as a way to deter predators who dislike the bitter taste of the milkweed. The decline of milkweed populations throughout the Northeast further threatens monarch butterflies, which depend on them for food and protection.

Visit Sturgis Library in Barnstable Village to learn how to enhance your garden with milkweed plants and pick up seed packets. Seeds are available now, and participants may pick them up from the library during regular open hours. A $2 donation per pack is suggested. Donations will support butterfly education efforts at Long Pasture.

For more information, please contact either Sturgis Library at 508-362-6636 or Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary at 508-362-7475. You can also send an email to sturgislibrary@comcast.net.

Portraits in Silhouette

Capture a Precious Moment in Time
at the Sturgis Library Youth Services Holiday Fundraiser

Portraits in Silhouette will be at the Sturgis Library on Tuesday, December 8th from 2:00 - 7:00pm, cutting silhouettes by appointment for your holiday gifts and treasured memories! Support your library and leave with a unique keepsake that will be cherished for a lifetime. We'll have homemade sweets available for purchase and complimentary hot cocoa for all to enjoy.

Portraits are $40 each and hand cut by Marcella Comerford, a second-generation silhouette artist. A generous portion of all proceeds will help fund 2016 programming for kids at Sturgis Library.

Call 508.362.6636, email sturgiskids@comcast.net or stop by in person to secure your appointment and cross a lucky loved one off your shopping list this holiday season.

SCHEDULING APPOINTMENTS / GENERAL INFORMATION:
Please schedule one appointment for each individual. Although each appointment is ten minutes, your child NEEDS ONLY TO SIT FOR FIVE! The silhouette artist has a photographic memory and is very experienced with wiggly little ones, so the actual profile may be captured in less time. We provide some toys and entertainment, but feel free to bring your own. Be assured, we are extremely good at capturing the most curious and wiggly of children. Your matted silhouette will be completed (and copied/framed if purchased) at the time of your appointment.

COST:
A deposit of $40, the cost of the silhouette, is required to hold each appointment. THIS
COST COVERS THE SILHOUETTE matted on acid-free, cotton rag archival mat board. Unless you wish to upgrade your matting to an antique book remnant for $10 or purchase copies and/or frames (pricing below) you will owe no additional money at the time of your appointment.

COPIES, MATTING and FRAMES:
You may order copies (cut at the same time as the silhouette, using multiple sheets of paper at once) for $15 per copy, at the time of your appointment. The copies are fantastic and affordable gifts for grandparents, godparents, aunts and uncles, etc... Please let the artist know if you will need more than one copy before she starts cutting.
Each silhouette comes on a 5x7, 8x10, or 11x14 mat based on the pairing of silhouettes per mat. Traditional silhouette frames are also offered at the time of the event. The artist offers high quality, hard to find, all wood black oval frames with a gold leaf inner rim in sizes 5x7 at $35 (suitable for one silhouette) 8x10 at $45 (suitable for 2-3 silhouettes) and 11x14 at $75 (suitable for 3-6 silhouettes.) The artist will also frame your silhouettes at the event should you choose to purchase frames, and depending on time constraints, you may take them with you immediately or pick them up after your appointment.

CANCELLATIONS and REFUNDS:
Should you find you need to cancel your appointment, please do so within 24 hours of the event by contacting the Sturgis Library at (508) 362-6636 or sturgiskids@comcast.net as the deposit is otherwise non-refundable.

CONTACT INFORMATION:
To schedule your appointment(s), please contact Sturgis Library at (508) 362-6636 or sturgiskids@comcast.net. You may also contact the artist Marcella at info@portraitsinsilhouette.com or (774) 200-5461 with any questions.

We're Stars!

Barnstable Libraries are STARS!

The Barnstable Libraries are pleased to announce that the Osterville, Sturgis, and Cotuit Libraries are three of the Star Libraries announced by the Library Journal on November 2, 2015.

261 libraries nationwide received a star rating and only 15 libraries in Massachusetts from the 7,663 libraries that were scored.   11 of the star libraries in Massachusetts are Cape and Islands libraries.

In Barnstable, Osterville got five stars, Cotuit got 4 stars, and Sturgis got 3 stars. This is Sturgis Library's second year as a star library.

"The Library Journal Index is a measurement tool that compares U.S. public libraries with their spending peers based on four per capita output measures: circulation, library visits, program attendance, and public Internet computer use. Scores on the LJ Index are produced by measuring the relationships between each library's statistics and the averages for its expenditure category," report Keith Curry Lance and Ray Lyons.

The data used by the LJ Index to score libraries comes from recently released information from the Institute of Museum and Library Services for FY13.

DI Coat and Blanket Drive

Sturgis Library is partnering with a local Destination Imagination (DI) team of 6th to 8th graders from the Cape Cod Lighthouse Charter School to help keep the homeless warm this winter.  The DI Team is holding a blanket and coat drive at the Library during the month of December, and will be working on a service project to help the homeless in other ways.

There will be a box for donations of new and gently used coats and blankets in the main entry area of the Library.  They will accept any sized coat, because homelessness has no one face or age.

The DI team is very grateful for any donations you can make.  Please bring your donations to the Library during regular hours.

What Do I Read (or Watch?) Next?

Here are the latest book and movie recommendations by our library patrons and volunteers.  Want to share your favorites?  Stop by and fill out a book/movie recommendation form, or send an email to sturgislibrary@comcast.net with your suggestions.

Max Kumin recommends the book Six Frigates: the Epic History of the Founding of the U. S. Navy by Ian Toll.  He was impressed with the depth of research and quality of writing.

Susan Barry loved the biographical novel The Marriage of Opposites: a Novel Based on the Life of Rachel Pizzaro by Alice Hoffman.  She said it took her to a place she's never been -- St. Thomas -- as well as to Paris, where she's visited in her travels.

Carole Weber found The Pull of the Moon by Elizabeth Berg real and authentic.  It's the story of a middle-aged woman who gets in her car one day and drives across the country, meeting people and learning about herself along the way.

Volunteer Sally Sapienza highly recommends author and poet Sandra Cisneros' memoir A House of My Own.  Cisneros has a "brilliant mind and is a fabulous writer."  She is also the author of the bestselling novel House on Mango Street.

Julianna O'Reilly likes that there is magic in the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling.  Sturgis Library carries both the book and movie versions.

Check the CLAMS website for more suggestions of new and popular titles. And stay tuned to next month's enewsletter for more suggestions!
