Programs for Kids!

LEGO Club!
Wednesday, November 4th from 4-5pm
The Sturgis Library LEGO CLUB will gather on the first Wednesday of every month from 4-5pm, beginning in November.  Kids can use our vast assortment of design books for inspiration, or bring concepts to life from their own imagination.  Using our massive collection of LEGOs, clubbers will spend the hour building with other LEGO enthusiasts and will then have the opportunity to display their creations for our patrons to admire throughout the remainder of the month.  An interesting new CHALLENGE will be revealed at the beginning of each monthly meeting and will determine our engineering goals for that hour.  Kids can always choose freestyle design if they prefer.

Movin' & Groovin' For Toddlers

Back, by popular demand!  Sing, dance and make music with new friends at Sturgis Library!  Join Alicia Mathewson Monday mornings and start your week off on the right foot with this engaging family music class for toddlers (4 and under) and their caregivers.  Alicia's positive spirit is contagious and her approach to sharing music with young children is both unique and inspiring.  Kids will explore fun ways to use their voices, bodies and instruments to make music in this five-week series.  Advance registration is recommended to guarantee a spot.  Drop-ins are welcome on a weekly basis, space-permitting.

What Do I Read (or Watch?) Next?

This month we start a new feature of book and movie recommendations by our patrons as well as our staff members, Board members, and volunteers.  Stop by and fill out a book/movie recommendation form, or send an email to sturgislibrary@comcast.net with your suggestions.

Sturgis Library's maintenance man and former teacher Gordon Starr recommends the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel Olive Kittredge by Elizabeth Strout.  He loved the variety of endearing, intertwined characters.  HBO's miniseries film adaptation won 8 Emmy' awards.

Lezlie Souve recommends the documentary Winter on Fire about the unrest in Ukraine during 2013 and 2014, as student demonstrations supporting European integration grew into a violent revolution calling for the resignation of President Viktor F. Yanukovich.  This film is available on Netflix.

Volunteer Shirley Stolte highly recommends R. J. Palacio's books Wonder and 365 Days of Wonder:  Mr. Browne's Book of Precepts.   Though written for young people, she found universal appeal in the story of a boy with an extreme facial abnormality as aportrait of one community's struggle with empathy, compassion, and acceptance.

Staff member Eric Grossman recommends the HBO miniseries John Adams.  This series stars Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney as John and Abagail Adams, and transports the viewer back in time to the founding of the United States and the life of John Adams and his remarkable family.  After seeing the series, we recommend taking a road trip to Quincy, Massachusetts to visit the John Adams National Historical Park.

Check the CLAMS website for more suggestions of new and popular titles.

Books (and more) Needed!

We are in need of new, gently used, and antiquarian books, movies, music, puzzles, and household items for our Bookshop and Mini-Thrift shelves.  If you're doing fall cleaning, think of Sturgis Library!  We accept donations of books and other items 6 days a week during regular hours.  We take materials for adult, young adults and children.  Proceeds from our Bookshop help to fund Library programs and services.

In addition to the above items, we are always interested in collections of family papers, letters, photographs, and documents relating to Cape Cod families.  These items will be added to our archival collections for use by researchers.  If you have family papers that you are interested in donating, please contact Lucy at 508-362-8448 or email her at sturgislibrary@comcast.net.

Ways to Give

give Are you a Sturgis Library supporter? Many of our library patrons and visitors are not aware that we are an independent nonprofit organization and that we need your help to keep us going.

Just like public radio or your favorite charity, we rely on donations for a major part of our annual operating budget and for all capital improvements.  We receive only 40% of our operating funding from the Town of Barnstable, and must raise the rest -- 60% -- through donations, grants, event proceeds, sales, and investment income.

There are many ways to give -- cash donations, securities, bequests, gifts of property or vehicle donations.  You can give to our annual appeal or our building fund, in memory of a loved one or in honor of a special person in your life.  You can donate used books, music, movies and household items, family papers and genealogy, plants for our garden sale, and baked goods for our bake sales.  Every gift, large and small, is important to us.

We hope, in turn, that we provide you with services and programs that enhance your life and that Sturgis Library is a place you love to visit -- for lifelong learning, entertainment, education, and community.
