Ways to Give

give Are you a Sturgis Library supporter? Many of our library patrons and visitors are not aware that we are an independent nonprofit organization and that we need your help to keep us going.

Just like public radio or your favorite charity, we rely on donations for a major part of our annual operating budget and for all capital improvements.  We receive only 40% of our operating funding from the Town of Barnstable, and must raise the rest -- 60% -- through donations, grants, event proceeds, sales, and investment income.

There are many ways to give -- cash donations, securities, bequests, gifts of property or vehicle donations.  You can give to our annual appeal or our building fund, in memory of a loved one or in honor of a special person in your life.  You can donate used books, music, movies and household items, family papers and genealogy, plants for our garden sale, and baked goods for our bake sales.  Every gift, large and small, is important to us.

We hope, in turn, that we provide you with services and programs that enhance your life and that Sturgis Library is a place you love to visit -- for lifelong learning, entertainment, education, and community.

It's 1774 in Barnstable Village

Saturday, October 24th, 2015
Go back in Time to 1774 Barnstable Village

The Yarmouth Minutemen will set up an educational encampment on the Sturgis Library front lawn from 10-4.  Experience colonial life and learn about the politics during the beginning of the Revolution, as unrest was growing and Cape residents began openly talking about pressuring the British government to respect their rights as citizens.  There will be a march to the old Courthouse (now Tales of Cape Cod) and a Liberty pole will be planted here at Sturgis Library, where they will set up camp.  Demonstrations will include preparing lunch over a cook fire, militia drills with musket firing and a Revolutionary War cannon, writing with a quill pen and other civilian activities.  Great fun for the entire family and history buffs of all ages!

By employing permaculture techniques, we mimic natural systems, letting nature do the work. Thus, our inputs are minimized and our yields are increased. This presentation will cover basic techniques for edible landscaping, edible forest gardening, polycultures and plant guilds, perennial vegetables, organic no-till gardening and much more. Stuffed Animal Slumber Party

Friday, October 23rd
Stuffed Animal Slumber Party at Sturgis Library
Is your favorite furry friend or doll ready for a sleepover at the Library?  Do you think they will all behave, or get into mischief together?  Miss Megan will read them bedtime stories and tuck them in, but the security cameras might capture some interesting shenanigans during the night.  Drop off on Friday between 4-5pm and pick up Saturday morning from 10-11am.  Each treasured friend will be given a special name tag and kept under careful watch until reunited with their owners.  Animals gently stuffed through the drop-box slot on Friday evening (tagged with owner's full name) can join the fun, too!  Watch our Facebook page for photos on Saturday.

Books (and more) Needed!

We are in need of new, gently used, and antiquarian books, movies, music, puzzles, and household items for our Bookshop and Mini-Thrift shelves.  If you're doing fall cleaning, think of Sturgis Library!  We accept donations of books and other items 6 days a week during regular hours.  We take materials for adult, young adults and children.  Proceeds from our Bookshop help to fund Library programs and services.

In addition to the above items, we are always interested in collections of family papers, letters, photographs, and documents relating to Cape Cod families.  These items will be added to our archival collections for use by researchers.  If you have family papers that you are interested in donating, please contact Lucy at 508-362-8448 or email her at sturgislibrary@comcast.net.
