Plant Sale Coming in June
|
| |
Welcome Spring!
Get ready for the Sturgis Library's
Annual Plant and Garden Sale
which will be held on
Saturday, June 6th, 2015 from 9 to 2
At last we can turn our thoughts to starting seedlings, dividing and transplanting in our yards! Please help us make this year's plant sale as successful as last year by starting or dividing a few extra vegetables plants, perennials and annuals. The yearly plant sale is dependent on your donations.
Last year's popular items included vegetables, herbs, flowers, hosta, flowering geraniums, iris, butterfly bush, hydrangea and Solomon's seal. What's in your garden that you'd be willing to share?
We are also looking for gently used gardening tools, ornaments,
furniture, birdfeeders, and gardening books, as well as decorative pots and baskets.
Please wait to donate plants until May 25th, but we're happy to accept
garden items starting April 15th.

Sturgis Library Expands Genealogical Resources
| |
Sturgis Library has recently become the newest FamilySearch affiliate library. This designation means that Library patrons will have greater and more convenient access to the wealth of genealogical resources available through FamilySearch-the world's largest repository of free genealogical records and the manager of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah.
FamilySearch is extending access to its collections by circulating microfilms of the historic records through select public libraries. Library Director, Lucy Loomis, was alerted in December 2014 by David Martin, President of the Cape Cod Genealogical Society, that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Brewster was closing its Family Center. He suggested that Sturgis might be an ideal location to offer the FamilySearch resources to Cape residents. Sturgis worked with Salt Lake City and Brewster to ensure that the materials could be transferred to their new location, and the Library is ready to receive researchers and the records they request.
There is a nominal fee of $7.50 to order a microfilm, which researchers can do themselves through the FamilySearch web site (FamilySearch.org). Once the film arrives, patrons use the microfilm readers at Sturgis Library to peruse it. "Less than 5% of the world's genealogical records are available online, and most family history researchers cannot afford to travel to an archive nationally or worldwide to find the historic records they are seeking," said Paul Nauta, FamilySearch Public Affairs Manager. "If FamilySearch has filmed the records they need, then as far as they will need to travel to view them is Sturgis Library." FamilySearch has over 200 camera teams filming historic records in 45 countries on any given day. These records are then circulated to public patrons through FamilySearch centers worldwide.
Researchers are welcome to access their FamilySearch materials any time the Library is open. We suggest you make a reservation to use the microfilm reader to ensure availability. Printouts are 20 centers per page. Call the library at 508-362-6636 to reserve the reader or for additional information.

Leaving a Legacy Through Lasting Words, with Claire Willis
Saturday, May 16 @ 4:00 p.m.
Most of us, as we grow older, share the wish to be remembered, to feel that our lives have made a difference and to express our values, life lessons and love to family and friends. Many of us have prepared legal wills to distribute our belongings, but few of us have considered leaving a spiritual/ethical will--a record of who we are that can be offered to loved ones. Author Claire Willis will address some of the universal concerns that emerge as we age, such as life review, gratitude, making amends and closing our life and will discuss various techniques and resources for creating a legacy that reflects what is most essential to us. This workshop is free, but registration is requested.
