Reading and Discussion of Nickle and Dimed

We are still trying to rescheduled Dr. Elaine Craghead's Reading and Discussion Lecture on "Nickel and Dimed," by Barbara Ehrenreich.  We have had to cancel it twice due to the weather.  Keep an eye on our website, facebook page, and this enewsletter for the new date!

Sturgis Library Deed Index

Sturgis Library is pleased to present our new historic deeds index. Staff and volunteers have been working to index the Stanley Smith Deeds Collection, an extensive collection of Cape Cod deeds dating from the 1600s to the early 20th century.

The Stanley Smith Deeds Collection comprises deeds for land, property, wharfs, salt works, church pews, etc. The deeds were collected by Stanley Smith over the course of his life's research into Cape Cod genealogy and history.

This online database-a work in progress-has been created to allow researchers to examine the data from the deeds without having to handle the fragile documents or decipher the 17th-19th century handwriting.

In addition to the index, we are working with the Boston Public Library to digitize the deeds so that researchers will be able to search the index and then click on a link to see the deed.  This option will be available later this year.

To learn more about the deeds and index, and search the collection,  visit the

Stanley Smith Deeds Collection page.

Sturgis Seed Library Seed Swap

Join members of the Cape Cod Food Hub on Saturday, March 14th at 1 PM for the opening day of the Sturgis Seed Library's 2015 growing season! This year we are delighted to offer high-quality vegetable, herb, and flower seeds that were either grown here on the Cape or donated by Seed Savers Exchange. These seeds are available free of charge to all members of the community.

We also encourage gardeners to bring leftover seeds (and accompanying gardening stories) to share and swap during the event.

Cape Cod Food Hub members will be on hand to answer questions about using the seed library, saving seed, or any other garden questions you might have. Sturgis Library's collection of gardening and seed saving books will also be available for browsing and checking out.

This is a free program, and no registration is required.  Bring friends and family for a respite from the snow!
