Don't Miss Vonnegut Beer Launch!

The Vonnegut Celebration Committee has been working behind the scenes with Cape Cod Beer to develop a special brew in honor of Kurt Vonnegut.  Vonnegut's maternal grandfather Albert Lieber was a brewer until he was put out of business by prohibition in 1920.

The beer launch party will take place at Cape Cod Beer on Saturday, September 12th from 4 to 6 PM.  The beer will be available for sale in a limited edition run, and will be served throughout the Vonnegut Celebration

Banned Books Discussion

Bowdlerized, Banned, and Burned

An Investigation of Banned Books with Anne Speyer

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2014 at 6:30 PM

Everybody knows books have been banned in the Middle East and Russia, but all too few realize how often they're under attack in the United States. Anne Speyer, librarian, teacher and ardent bibliophile, will explore the history of book banning. You'll probably discover that at least one of your own favorites is on someone else's "people you shouldn't read" list, including Kurt Vonnegut!

This is a free program, though good-will donations are appreciated.

Please register in advance by calling 508-362-6636 or emailing sturgislibrary@comcast.net.

Take the Vonnegut Writing Challenge

Take the Kurt Vonnegut Writing Challenge!

Writer Kurt Vonnegut, a major presence in Barnstable Village in the 1960s and 70s, and once a Trustee of Sturgis Library, created a list of 8 rules for writers. Think you can follow them? See what you can do!

Submit your entry by October 5th, 2014. We'll share them during the Vonnegut Celebration and on our website, and highlight those that come closest to following the rules.

Here are the rules, as Vonnegut wrote them in Bagombo Snuff Box: Uncollected Short Fiction:

1.
Use the time of a total stranger in such a way that he or she will not feel the time was wasted.
2. Give the reader at least one character he or she can root for.
3. Every character should want something, even if it is only a glass of water.
4. Every sentence must do one of two things: reveal character or advance the action.
5. Start as close to the end as possible.
6.  Be a Sadist. No matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them in order that the reader may see what they are made of.
7. Write to please just one person. If you open a window and make love to the world, so to speak, your story will get pneumonia.
8. Give your readers as much information as possible as soon as possible. To hell with suspense. Readers should have such complete understanding of what is going on, where and why, that they could finish the story themselves should cockroaches eat the last few pages.
And one extra rule from us: Keep your story to 1,000 words or less.

Submit your work in one of the following ways by October 5th, 2014:

*     Drop off at the desk at Sturgis Library

*     Email to sturgislibrary@comcast.net

*     Fax to 508-362-5467

*     Mail to: Sturgis Library PO Box 606 Barnstable, MA 02630 Attn: Vonnegut Writing Challenge
