Library Snapshot Day

Stop by Sturgis Library on Thursday, April 10th as we celebrate Library Snapshot Day, a nationwide event held annually to illustrate what happens in a library during one day -- who comes to visit, what activities take place, and more.

In previous years staff members have taken photographs of willing library patrons as they visited the library, attended programs, did research, read the paper, used computer resources, and checked out library materials.  To see photos of previous year's Snapshot Day, click the following links:

Snapshot Day 2011

This year, in addition to taking photographs, we will be asking visitors for quotes about what the library means to them.  We're starting to gather quotes now, so if you can't attend Snapshot Day on April 10th, you can drop your quote off any time prior to the event, or email it to us at sturgislibrary@comcast.net

We'll be creating a book of photos and quotes to commemorate Library Snapshot Day 2014, as well as posting photos on our flickr photo page.

Seed Lending Library Now Open

Sturgis Library's Seed Lending Library is now officially open!

Sturgis Library has partnered with the Cape Cod Food Hub and is now one of Cape Cod's first Seed Lending LibrariesLibraries across the country are working with local farms, growers, and gardeners to promote seed saving and seed sharing.  The Concord Public Library in Concord, Massachusetts has an active program in place, and the Norwell Public Library is starting a similar program this year.

Gardeners are invited to come and register to borrow seeds for a variety of vegetables which grow well here on Cape Cod.  In the fall, save the seeds from several of your plants and bring some of them back to the library to add to the seed library.  It's that easy!

The Seed Lending Library is a free program.  We will be offering a series of gardening programs throughout the season in conjunction with the Cape Cod Food Hub and local gardeners.  Keep an eye on our events calendar for more information.

Upcoming Programs for Adults
The Lafayette Escadrille with Historian Mark Wilkins
Tuesday, 8 April @6:30 pm

Although America initially tried to maintain neutrality in WWI, Woodrow Wilson was eventually compelled to lead the country to war in 1917. As early as 1915, however, Americans were fighting in the skies above France, Belgium and Germany in their frail biplanes made from canvas and wood, against an enemy who seemed to have the upper hand. This talk explores and chronicles the rich history of the first American flyers to join the fight during the Great War. Within the French air force, they would ultimately form their own squadron-the Lafayette Escadrille. This talk is free, but registration is required.

Under the Wren Song: Haiku Reading and Discussion with Poet and Artist DeWayne Stallings

Tuesday, 29 April @6:30 p.m.

Celebrate National Poetry Month with an exploration of the traditional Japanese poetry form, the haiku. Barnstable resident, DeWayne Stallings, recently wrote, illustrated and self-published his book of haiku, "Under the Wren Song." He will talk about the history and culture of the form and read samples from notable masters as well as from his own book. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

DeWayne Stallings teaches at Cape Cod Academy and has a BA from the University of Minnesota and an MAE from RISD. He uses his perceptions of the natural world, developed in his early years in Minnesota, as the foundation of his haiku writing, and his studies of Japanese haiku in translation have greatly influenced his efforts to maintain a mostly nature-centered approach to the content of his work. This talk is free, but registration is required.

Monthly Book Discussion Group

The book group meets the third Tuesday of the month at 1:10 p.m. New members are always welcome. You can email Antonia at sturgisreference@comcast.net to be added to the group email list (which means books will be ordered for you in advance). April's selection is "The Picture of Dorian Gray," by Oscar Wilde.

Reading and Discussion Series 2014

Odd Couples: Literary Feuds, Friendships and Falling-outs

4th Tuesday of the month through April 2014 @6:30 p.m.

The relationships between authors and their opinions of each others' work can make for fascinating study, especially if there are elements of conflict involved. As Anthony Arthur notes in his book, Literary Feuds: A Century of Celebrated Quarrels--From Mark Twain to Tom Wolfe, "it is an appreciation of the degree to which writers, in their art, overcome their limitations as people."

In this series, sponsored in part by Mass Humanities, we will explore the works of four pairs of authors who were known or rumored to have a complicated relationship with one another, either in their personal lives or in regard to their literary output (which often became personal). The remaining discussions are as follows:

  • 25 March: "Ethan Brand," by Nathaniel Hawthorne and "Billy Budd," by Herman Melville, with Dr. Sam Coale.
  • 22 April: "The Alchemist," by Ben Jonson and "Twelfth Night," by William Shakespeare, with Dr. James Crowley.

Mass Humanites logo Just send an email to Antonia at sturgisreference@comcast.net with your name, email and phone number. The texts for the next discussion on 22 April @6:30 p.m. are available now behind the circ desk.

Upcoming Adult Programs:
  • Luminaries of West Barnstable, with author James H. Ellis. Saturday, 17 May @2:00 p.m.

Sally Cabot Gunning Author Talk and Reception

Sturgis Library and Tales of Cape Cod are pleased to present their second annual historical author lecture this summer.  Last year's sold-out event featured Nantucket author Nathaniel Philbrick.

This year, Brewster author Sally Cabot Gunning will speak at the Barnstable Village Hall / Comedy Club on Thursday, July 10th, 2014 at 6 PM.  Sally will discuss her latest novel, Benjamin Franklin's Bastard, as well as her Satucket Series of historical novels -- Widow's War, Bound, and The Rebellion of Jane Clarke -- which are set in part on Cape Cod.

Sally brings history to life as she weaves her tales of life in Revolutionary-era America.  Cape Cod becomes a character in many of her novels along with real historical figures including James Otis, Joseph Warren, Benjamin Franklin and others.  You can learn more about Sally and her books on her website:  www.sallygunning.com.

Sally's talk will be followed by a reception with delicious food, wine, beer, and light refreshments.  Sally will sign and sell copies of her books, and be available to answer questions.
