History Along Route 6A
Saturday, 1 June through Monday, 10 June
Celebrate the rich history of the Old King's Highway at this series of free and low-cost events taking place up and down Route 6A in Barnstable and Yarmouth Port. This is a great--and affordable way--for residents and visitors alike to learn about these old and beautiful villages.
Events include an architectural walking tour of Yarmouth Port with Sarah Jane Porter and Duncan Oliver, a historical walking tour of the Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary with Ian Ives, an open house at the Barnstable Historical Society, blacksmith Jim Ellis at the forge by the Old Jail, free admission to exhibits at the Coast Guard Heritage Museum and the Unitarian Church of Barnstable (with a costumed interpreter!), free tours of the Winslow Crocker House and the Captain Bangs Hallet House in Yarmouth Port (be sure to mention "History Along Route 6A" at both locations!), a reading of Civil War letters and reminiscences presented by the Historical Society of Old Yarmouth at the New Church ($10 suggested donation), a musical concert with Just Plain Folk, a lecture on Barnstable Harbor during the glacial period, a children's gravestone rubbing craft (not real gravestones, don't worry!) and a Cape Cod-themed book sale at Sturgis Library, lectures on the Archaeology of Taylor-Bray Farm and the History Collections at Yarmouth Port Library and talk about Barnstable's Schools at Tales of Cape Cod (followed by the Mercy Otis Warren Woman of the Year A ward presentation). Also available at Sturgis Library, Yarmouth Port Library and the participating inns is "A Taste of History." This cookbook contains breakfast/brunch recipes, along with a brief history of the establishments, contributed by the historical inns along Route 6A, and a portion of proceeds will go to the two libraries. The books are $10.
Please visit the History Along Route 6A web page for the most up-to-date listings, as well as dates, times and a more-detailed description of the programs. Questions? Call 508-362-6636 or email Antonia at sturgisreference@comcast.net

Teen Artists Coalition
|
Sturgis Library is delighted to launch our latest collaborative youth program: The Teen Artists Coalition of Cape Cod. This "society" of young artisans will gather one Saturday per month to engage in cutting-edge creative self expression. Each 3 hour studio project will be relevant and enthralling but also chosen to ensure success, in support of our ultimate goal for this program - to empower our young adults with self esteem and healthy/constructive coping strategies for the difficult road of life ahead. Collaborative instruction will be provided by local artisan, Nettie Berkeley and Youth Services Librarian, Megan McClelland Nickerson. The program (including materials) will be offered free of charge. At such a critical time in personal development, it's

especially important to have "cool" alternatives that satisfy boredom and curiosity - art is a healthy addiction! A graffiti art mural designed and created collectively as part of this program will become the Teen Artists Coalition logo and will be leveraged for future promotion and fundraising efforts. The first 6 sessions are partially sponsored by The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod and we will enthusiastically aim to continue/sustain this engaging safe haven for Cape Cod teens.
Registration Required - Space Limited To 12 Teens (ages 13+) Per Saturday. To register for any of the following programs, please call the Library at 508-362-6636 or email Megan at sturgiskids@comcast.net.
June 15th, 12-3pm - Jewelry Making for Guys & Girls
July 13th, 12-3pm - Collaborative Mission Graffiti Art Mural
August 10th, 12-3pm - Tile Art
September 21st, 12-3pm - DIY Henna Paste & Body Art for Guys & Girls
October 19th, 12-3pm - Hammered Metal & Stamped Clay Art
*Please eat lunch prior to the program!

Save the Date...for Autumnfest!

|
Autumn Brilliance & Daylilies
| We'd like to thank NStar for donating a new tree for the front yard of the Sturgis Library. The plant is called Autumn Brilliance or Autumn Serviceberry, and it boasts lovely spring flowers, showy edible berries, and great fall color. It stays fairly compact, but will grow large enough to provide a bit of shade for the stone bench which was donated in the 1990s by Shepley Wood Products. We think it will make a great addition to the Sturgis Library landscape.
We'd also like to thank Phyllis Davis for planting a new bed of daylilies at the rear of the library. We're looking forward to seeing the many varieties that will be blooming throughout the summer and fall. We appreciate your efforts, Phyllis!

Become a Sturgis Sustainer
| Some of you may have recently received our Annual Appeal letter in the mail, asking for your help in reaching our FY13 fundraising goal. Read on to find out how easy it is to give online!
As you know from previous issues of this newsletter, the Sturgis Library relies on your generous donations for 60% of our annual operating budget. We appreciate the support of our many donors.
We want to make it easier for you to give to the library on a regular basis, and so we have established a new monthly giving program where you can tell us how much you want to give each month, and the amount will automatically be charged to your credit card. Your donation of $5, $10, $25, or $50 a month (or more!) makes a huge difference to the Library, and helps us meet our fundraising goal.
As a thank-you, we're offering your choice of a Sturgis Library Bistro mug or Sturgis Library cap for signing up for monthly donations or for giving $100 or more a year. This offer is good only through June 30th, so make your donation soon! To donate online through our website using your credit card or Paypal account, CLICK HERE. If you prefer to donate directly by check, or if you have questions about our giving options, please contact Library Director Lucy Loomis at 508-362-8448 or send her an email at sturgislibrary@comcast.net. |
