Happy Holidays from all of us at ALMS!
December 2015
Farewell, Arin!

On Friday, Arin MacFarlane Dyer had her last day at the Alberta Lake Management Society. Arin was an integral part of the organization, serving as the Executive Director for nearly five years. We would like to thank Arin for the significant contributions she made to ALMS, particularly in the areas of Lake Watershed Management.

Arin is moving onward and upwards and we wish her nothing but happiness and success in her future endeavors.

You will be missed, Arin!

The ACA Addresses Ice Safety

The ACA crew installing floating docks: 2015.
This winter, the Alberta Conservation Association is taking extra steps to ensure the public stays safe on Alberta's lakes - in particular, those with aerators. Sub-surface aerators can be hazardous as they create polynyas (open water areas surrounded by ice) during the winter months. To ensure the public remains safe, the ACA will be installing floating docks covered in chain link fencing to ensure nobody takes an unwanted swim.

Here is a recommended ice-thickness guide for those headed onto lakes this winter:

Clear Blue Lake Ice Thickness
Allowable Load
10 cm
Travel on foot
12 cm
Snowmobiles and ATVs
20 cm
Cars and light trucks
30 cm
Medium pickup truck
38 cm
Heavy truck (6.5 tonnes)

Thank you to the Edmonton Old Timer's Fishing Club for the information on ice thickness.
AWQA Results!

Congratulations to photo contest winner, Saikat Kumar Basu!

In 2015, AWQA kicked off with a lighting of the High Level Bridge in Edmonton - and after a busy summer, the results are in!

Nearly 1100 Albertans got their feet wet using the AWQA kits this year. The 2015 data has now been summarized into a report available on the ALMS website - can you see your sample point on the map?

We hope the summer of AWQA was educational and engaging - if you have yet to upload your data, please do so! Uploading your data to our website can now be done year round.

Welcome to Alicia Kennedy!

Alicia Kennedy comes to ALMS from Nova Scotia with a passion for biology and all things GIS. Alicia is already putting her GIS skills to work developing lake watershed maps, creating reports, and managing the ALMS website.

Alicia will be transitioning into a LakeWatch Technician this upcoming summer and is looking forward to exploring the province!

We are excited to see what GIS magic she can work for us!

Welcome, Alicia!
