Alberta Lake Management Society Newsletter
November 2015
Thank You to our LakeWatch Volunteers!
We had another great year monitoring lakes as well as hosting education and awareness events across the province and we couldn't have done it without our volunteers. These individuals spend many hours out on the lake with our technicians collecting information on water quality and lake life.

Each year ALMS selects a volunteer to receive our Volunteer of the Year Award. These volunteers are individuals who have shown outstanding dedication and enthusiasm through the LakeWatch program. In 2015, the recipient of this award was our Crane Lake volunteer, Ron Young.

Ron has volunteered with the LakeWatch Program for five seasons and every LakeWatch Technician he has worked with has recognized him as a volunteer of merit. Ron has been an extremely valuable member of the LakeWatch program - without volunteers like Ron, very little data would exist for some of Alberta's most valuable freshwater resources. Thank you!

Learn more about Crane Lake, Ron Young, and volunteering for LakeWatch. We'd also like to take this opportunity to thank Catfish Coffee roasters in Edmonton who generously donated coffee for all of our LakeWatch volunteers.
Aquatic Invasive Species Update

Alberta has really ramped up efforts to prevent aquatic invasive species being introduced into Alberta waters. Many stewards and organizations have worked with the government to make it happen. Here is an update on some of the news this summer:
        • 77 lakes & reservoirs monitored for veligers. None found.
        • 40 inspectors at 12 stations inspected 21,000 boats. 11 mussel fouled boats, 3 with live mussels.
        • Changes to the Federal Fisheries Act in June, to make it illegal to transfer mussels across boarder.
        • Eradication of Bullhead Catfish illegally introduced to a pond near Fort McMurray
        • Mapping of Flowering Rush infestations at Chestermere and Isle Lakes.
        • "Don't Let it Loose" Campaign launched to educate about release of aquarium species, specially goldfish (prussian carp).
