Allons - Zachary Richard Poetry
Zachary Richard is always writing. When he's not meticulously assembling melodies, he's exploring other ways to muse on the world as he sees it. Naturally, Zachary gravitates toward the lyrical nature of poetry and discusses the themes and inspiration of his work.

"I try to write poetry every day. I am not able to write a song every day. A song is a long, long process. The elements are the same because I am dealing with rhythm and rhyme, the sounds of words and the meanings of words and the musicality of both."

"My poetry is very musical because I am so attached to the way things sound and the way words punctuate rhythms. It's like a Janus-faced to me, the same head but they're looking in different directions."

"Of course the greatest influence on my poetry was Gary Snyder, the ultimate nature poet. He brought me and a whole generation of American poets to Japanese Haiku and to the celebration of simplicity, nature and a force in the power of expression of profound reality through the simplest things."

"As a French poet I have really stayed in that genre because I basically have two themes. One of which is political and that's the nature of being or at least having the unfortunate feeling that one is a vestige of culture. Two is being marginalized if not eliminated from the cultural discourse which is something that's always revolted me and I have always resisted so that's part of my French expression."

"To be able to use those two expressions in order to define my own humanity is really what it's all about for me. But they are very different although very similar. Like a painting is oil, canvas and a paint brush, but there's a difference between abstract expressionism and impressionism and that's kind of the way I look at songwriting and poetry."

"What I am trying to do in both cases is to touch people and to express my own humanity in a way that's going to mean something to somebody else somewhere, somehow, someday."
