San Diego Zoo Global and Water Authority Join Forces
to Combat Drought

San Diego Zoo Global Water Conservation

San Diego Zoo Global and the Water Authority announced new outreach efforts at the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park to encourage water conservation as statewide drought conditions become more severe.

The partnership is part of the regional campaign "When in Drought: Save every day, every way." It will include: updated signs at both Zoo parks that emphasize water-smart practices; water conservation reminders during bus and tram tours; and social media posts that highlight California's water supply challenges while encouraging park supporters to conserve water.

The messages include real-world examples of water conservation efforts by San Diego Zoo Global.  For instance, San Diego Zoo Global recycles more than 16 million gallons of water annually and uses that water to support its horticultural collection at the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. In addition, the Zoo uses water-saving technologies such as low-flow toilets, water reclamation ponds and evaporation-reducing mulch around plants.

When in Drought Campaign Items Spread Water-Saving Ethic

Yard signs, vehicle decals and fridge magnets encourage more savings

Residents and businesses can show their commitment to water conservation during serious statewide drought conditions with new items offered for free by the Water Authority. The items are designed to draw attention to drought conditions, recognize people who are doing their part, and help them share their water-saving efforts with neighbors, colleagues and friends.

New yard signs and magnetic car decals are emblazoned with the When in Drought logo and the phrase "I'm saving every day, every way." Fridge magnets offer simple water-saving tips for indoors. The items are available at the Water Authority headquarters, 4677 Overland Avenue in Kearny Mesa, and at two upcoming San Diego County Garden Friendly Plant Fairs, which offer discounts on low-water-use plants at select locations of The Home Depot. The plant fair schedule and other water conservation resources are at WaterSmartSD.org.

In addition, people can pick up yard signs at Mission Hills Nursery, 1525 Fort Stockton Dr., San Diego, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Nov. 1. Magnetic car decals will be handed out at Body Beautiful Car Wash, 2045 Pacific Highway, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 24.

Board Chair Featured in "The Big Picture San Diego Blog"

Board Chair Mark Weston was featured this week in the "The Big Picture San Diego Blog" by the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation.

"By 2020, the Water Authority anticipates achieving its long-term goals for creating a fully diversified water supply, and we also expect the region will meet the state Legislature's mandate to reduce water use by 20 percent by 2020," Weston said. "But that doesn't mean our job is done."

The San Diego County Water Authority works through its 24 member agencies to provide a safe and reliable water supply to support the region's $206 billion economy and quality of life of 3.1 million residents.
