As many of you may recall, one of the focus areas for this year was about positioning ICF-NJ as the go to authority for coaches and the people who hire or engage us (if you are working internal). We're excited to let you know that we sponsored the iPEC C.O.R.E. Retreat that was held in Iselin, NJ, from April 17-19, 2015. This allowed us to further develop our relationship with iPEC, while giving ICF-NJ some exposure to coaches who may not be members. They had approximately 200 coaches, current students as well as graduates, and the energy was at an all-time high! Bruce D. Schneider, founder of Energy Leadership, spoke about wisdom. During his presentation, he mentioned the impact that ICF had early on in his career as he was getting ready to publish one of his books.

Erica Loren and I had numerous conversations with attendees. For those who were interested, we helped them complete their ICF Global membership during that weekend. Since all who signed up said that this was something they had been thinking about doing and just had not completed the process, it was wonderful to be of service to fellow coaches.

In essence, this really kicked off our International Coaching Week activities even though the event was in April. As we move into May with a number of things planned for that week, we hope you will join us for one or more event!

Now for our practical application, when was the last time you positioned yourself as a go to authority for what you specialize in? Most of us spend time talking about the services we offer, the coaching process we go through, and maybe the benefits. Positioning is about using your unique talents, characteristics, gifts, etc., in your marketing and conversations so that people see you as an expert. And, by the way, positioning is important whether you are external or internal.  Personally, I believe internal coaches will benefit even more greatly from embracing this concept, since normally people see you as having a certain skillset that may not include coaching.

ICF-NJ is excited to be a part of your support system and look forward to having you at future events!

Wishing you GREAT success!

Take care,

Jennifer Smith, PCC

How Do You Choose to Participate in International Coaching Week?

The ICF is celebrating International Coaching Week (ICW) from
May 18-24, 2015. All 120 ICF Chapters have been challenged to help the world experience coaching during that week. ICF-NJ has stepped up to the challenge by being part of three unique events that will introduce the chapter and its coaches to different audiences.

On May 14th (actually a couple of days before coaching week kicks off), ICF-NJ will be the sponsor at the Jersey Shore for Human Resources Association's monthly breakfast in Neptune, NJ. The attendees, who are predominantly human resources professionals from many different companies, will be provided the opportunity to meet our members, hear a brief overview about the chapter and the type of services coaches can provide for their organizations, and be provided takeaways allowing for follow-up. All ICF-NJ coaches, but especially those living in the Central New Jersey area, are encouraged to attend. It is a great opportunity to make yourself known to individuals with the ability to bring you and your talents into their companies. Access event details and register
here.

On May 19th, ICF-NJ gives back in a very special way. Dress for Success in Madison, NJ, is a non-profit that assists women get back into the workforce. While known for providing clothing to women who normally could not afford it for interviews, the organization does so much more in helping the women learn about a job search. On the 19th, the chapter will be the main presenter at the monthly Dress for Success networking dinner for their clients. The program being presented is entitled "How to Maintain a Positive Attitude during Your Job Search". After a brief 10- to 15-minute overview, the attendees will be split up into small groups to discuss the topic further, in sessions facilitated by coaches from the chapter. We encourage our coaches to be a facilitator at the event and show your support for this great cause.

May 21st and 22nd will see chapter coaches providing 35 minute pro bono laser coaching sessions for the clients and staff members of C3 Workplace. C3 Workplace has locations in Montclair and Sparta, NJ.  In each location, on both the 21st and 22nd, three laser coaching session times will be offered in the morning and three coaching session times will be offered in the afternoon. C3 Workplace is a sponsorship partner of ICF-NJ and is promoting this benefit to their numerous clients. This is a great opportunity for coaches of ICF-NJ to not only offer their services, but to connect with potential clients, many of whom own entrepreneurial businesses. Those being coached will be exposed to the benefits of professional coaching, many for the first time.

The chapter expects all of these events to be a huge success.  However, we have an even greater chance of that happening if you offer your services as one of our members to participate. Please contact Tony Calabrese at
tony@absolutetransitions.com if you would like to participate in any of the coaching week events or for more details. He looks forward to hearing from you!

Bartering: A Quickbooks How-To

 Laura Melville, C3Workplace Director of

Accounting Support Services

Did you know that property or services received in the course of your business are considered income? According to the IRS, Publication 525, "Bartering is an exchange of property or services. You must include in your income, at the time received, the fair market value of property or services you receive in bartering. If you exchange services with another person and you both have agreed ahead of time on the value of the services, that value will be accepted as fair market value unless the value can be shown to be otherwise."

To some, this may seem like a bookkeeping nightmare. But, to those who use QuickBooks, they will be pleasantly surprised. Let's walk through an example, where ABC Company would provide bookkeeping services for Painter XYZ, but no cash will be exchanged.

  • Second, ABC will need to set up a Customer, for the current Vendor. QuickBooks will not allow you to have a customer and vendor with the same exact name ~ so you will have to create a name lightly different.
  • When the work is done, ABC will invoice the Painter for the amount due.
  • ABC will then "Receive Payment" in QuickBooks posting to the Barter account.
  • Now, the Painter sends ABC his bill. ABC will enter as a "normal" vendor bill in QuickBooks.
  • Go to "Vendor Pay Bills"... and pay the bill, posting to the Barter account.
  • The balance in the Barter account at the end of the month, will show who may owe who "real cash" ... For example if the Bookkeeping fee was $500 and the Painting fee was $600 ~ ABC technically owes the Painter $100 (which may then come out of "real cash").

The beauty of this system is that it allows QuickBooks to:

  • Accurately show the income earned.
  • Accurately show the expenses incurred.
  • Provide correct data to be reported on 1099-MISC.

Thus keeping you compliant! Yet another reason why QuickBooks is such a versatile tool to use.
