The ICLMG has signed the open letter

The Toronto Star 08/09/2015 - The brother of jailed Canadian journalist Mohamed Fahmy has expressed gratitude as more than 300 prominent Canadians sign an open letter calling on Stephen Harper to secure Fahmy's return to Canada. The letter, sent on Tuesday, asks Harper to take "personal and immediate action" to get Fahmy out of Egypt, where he and two Al Jazeera colleagues were sentenced to three years in prison on Aug. 29. "We call on you to make these commitments meaningful in the case of Mr. Fahmy," it reads. It is signed by former prime minister Paul Martin, former Supreme Court justice Louise Arbour, author Michael Ondaatje, humanitarian Stephen Lewis and environmentalist David Suzuki, among others. "We are extremely appreciative of the overwhelming support my brother is receiving in Canada," Adel Fahmy told the Star by phone Tuesday morning. "We are very grateful and it gives us hope that something will materialize soon. We feel that this is the only way that something can happen."

Louise Arbour says military alone 'not the answer' to Syrian refugee crisis

CBC 05/09/2015 - Canada can and should be doing more to bring in a larger number of Syrian refugees than the government's current target, says former Supreme Court justice and United Nations high commissioner on human rights Louise Arbour. "I think these numbers, frankly - 10,000 over the next four years - are so out of proportion of what Canada should be doing," she said in an interview on CBC Radio's The House. [...] Arbour had equally strong words for the government's controversial anti-terror legislation, Bill C-51, which was passed into law in June. "You hear Canadians say, 'I don't care all that much, I don't have anything to hide,'" Arbour said of the law that will result in more personal information being shared between government departments under the Security of Canada Information Sharing Act. "Privacy is not there to protect bad people who  have done bad things," said Arbour, whose daughter Emilie Taman is the NDP candidate for Ottawa-Vanier. "It's there to protect the scope for people to have their own spiritual, personal, intellectual, political life without that being exposed to the public if they don't want to." Arbour expects constitutional challenges to the legislation, and said she found the position of the Liberal Party - which voted for the bill but vowed to repeal or amend parts of it - to be "enormously disappointing."

Time for decisive leadership:
Refugee lawyers, human rights activists propose solution to expedite acceptance of Syrian refugees and reunite them with Canadian family

CCR 10/09/2015 - Syrian Canadians, Amnesty International, the Canadian Council for Refugees, and the Canadian Association of Refugee Lawyers today called on the government to immediately issue Temporary Residence Permits (TRPs) for Syrians with family in Canada. The growing humanitarian crisis of Syrian refugees and the federal government's failure to act innovatively and decisively is spurring advocates to propose its own solutions. The advocates say this would be a quick and effective way to ensure families are safe while their permanent resident applications are being processed inside Canada. "The lengthy multi-year processing delays for family sponsorships are unacceptable and especially brutal for Syrian refugees facing dangerous conditions in Syria and neighboring countries," said Lorne Waldman, Executive member of the Canadian Association of Refugee Lawyers. "As other countries prepare urgent and bold plans to accept more refugees, Canada can and must do more than it is currently doing." Over the last several days we have seen a number of national governments respond with strong leadership and deep compassion. In Canada, private citizens, faith communities, and civic leaders are all responding with generosity and resolve. Unfortunately, the federal government appears intent on standing pat. This is unacceptable. In previous times federal governments of different stripes responded ambitiously. Canada airlifted 5,000 people from Kosovo in the late 1990s and it took in 60,000 from Vietnam in 1979-80. To date, Canada has accepted only 2,374 refugees from Syria during this current crisis.

Canada's refugee policies are mean and incompetent

Editorial: On Syrian refugees, Harper has one last chance to change course

The Globe and Mail 09/09/2015 - If Mr. Harper wants to change course, he has two possible outs. He can call on Justin Trudeau and Tom Mulcair, the leaders of the Liberal and New Democratic parties, to meet with him and come up with a joint plan of immediate action - now, before the election is over. The other two leaders have been urging the government to take in more refugees and accelerate the exceedingly slow pace of refugee acceptance. They are right. Canada needs to send immigration officials to the Middle East and provide planes to fly the new refugees back to Canada - as was done in past refugee crises. Alternatively, Mr. Harper could implement all of this unilaterally. Even during an election, his party is still the government, and he is still the Prime Minister. The levers of power are his to operate. He has no excuse for inaction. There is an opportunity here for Mr. Harper to demonstrate that scarce quality that enables some politicians to rise above partisan imperatives in times of crisis. It's called statesmanship. It's what Canadians expect.

PM Harper: Call on the UAE to free Canadian citizen Salim Alaradi now!

ICLMG - Salim Alaradi, a Canadian citizen and father of 5 young children, has been detained without charge in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) since August 2014. We are also worried that he was tortured. His health is deteriorating quickly as his family has informed us this week. Write to Prime Minister Harper to urge him to call on the UAE to free Salim Alaradi now!

Remind Prime Minister Harper: Canadians welcome Syrian refugees

Amnesty International - On September 2, 2015, the body of three year old Aylan Kurdi washed ashore on a Turkish beach. He and his young brother were among at least 11 people believed to have drowned when their boat ran into trouble as they tried to reach the Greek island of Kos. Call on the Prime Minister and all party leaders to increase Canada's contribution to the Syrian refugee crisis!

All Parties: Commit to Repealing Citizenship Changes! Don't leave millions of us as second class Canadian citizens!

BCCLA, CARL - Canada is all about diversity. Many Canadians were born in other countries or are citizens of other countries because of their family history - and all of us are 100% Canadian. But the changes made to Canadian law by Bill C-24 will shatter a core principle of Canadian citizenship - that all Canadians have equal rights. This new law makes second-class citizens out of every Canadian who's born elsewhere or who is a dual citizen.

Petition: Call a Coroner's Inquest in to Abdi's death

End Immigration Detention Network - Abdi had been in immigration prison without charges, trial or date of release for three years at the time of his death in a maximum security prison in Lindsay, Ontario. Days after his death, 88 immigration detainees imprisoned at the same prison, the Central East Correction Centre, defied sanctions to issue a joint petition calling for an inquiry into their friend's death. We at the End Immigration Detention Network have just been able to access to this petition. It reads:
* Coroner's inquest must happen and made public.
* Thorough inquest, must include talking to detainees.
* Implementation (of recommendations) from the inquest must be made immediately.
* The parties responsible must be made accountable.
