The Canadian government wants to pay more people to creep your Facebook

Motherboard 13/11/2014 - After reportedly already spending $20 million on media monitoring services, the Conservative-led Stephen Harper government is also looking to fill another tender for a "Social Media Monitoring" system to "meet the needs of Federal Government Departments and Agencies." It appears that the procurement request, released in January, has yet to be filled, while companies like IBM, IG Global Intelligence, and SecDev Cyber, among many others, have all made bids on the tender. A similar tender from 2013 was already awarded. The call for a social media monitoring system comes amidst public statements by the federal government earlier this year claiming it wasn't interested in the individual social media accounts of Canadians, instead in "aggregated" data that it argues would be useful without presenting privacy concerns. [...] To [Canadian Privacy Commissioner] Bernier, the practise was potentially illegal. Under Canadian law, all citizens retain a "privacy interest" in their own data. That also includes publicly accessible data that lives online, in much the same way a license plate can be seen in public: citizens expect their plates won't be tracked or surveilled without a warrant.

UK intelligence agencies spying on lawyers in sensitive security cases

The Guardian 07/11/2014 - The intelligence services have routinely been intercepting legally privileged communications between lawyers and their clients in sensitive security cases, according to internal MI5, MI6 and GCHQ documents. The information obtained may even have been exploited unlawfully and used by the agencies in the fighting of court cases in which they themselves are involved, the Investigatory Powers Tribunal (IPT) has been told, resulting in miscarriages of justice. Exchanges between lawyers and their clients enjoy a special protected status under the law. The Conservative MP David Davis, a former shadow home secretary, said past practice was to delete such material immediately if it was ever picked up. Amnesty International said the government was gaining "an unfair advantage akin to playing poker in a hall of mirrors". Their comments come after 28 extracts of internal intelligence policies showing how legally privileged material is handled by security officials were released to lawyers pursuing a claim through the IPT. The tribunal considers complaints against MI5, MI6 and GCHQ.

The Secret Trial 5: Help Get This Film Across Canada!

The audiences have been engaged and enraged by this story, which is exactly what the team hoped for when they set out to make this film. With all the incredible press ST5 has received lately, people across Canada have started reaching out  to them asking when they can bring the film to their community. So, they've decided to go on a grassroots cross-Canada screening tour to bring the film to as many Canadians as possible, and they need your help! They just launched a new Kickstarter campaign to make this tour a reality.

The ICLMG has been supporting this project from day one. Please give and share widely!

Write a Letter to the Editor About Online Spying Bill C-13

Openmedia.ca - Bill C-13 will enable authorities to monitor the private lives of innocent Canadians, without any real oversight. It will even give telecom providers legal immunity for handing over your private information to the government without a warrant. That means people harmed wouldn't even have the right to sue. This reckless Bill has been rammed through the House of Commons and will soon be voted on by the Senate. We urgently need to get the word out in local communities across Canada.

Help stop Harper's thought police. Write a letter to your local media

Ceasefire.ca - Prime Minister Harper is manipulating last week's tragic killings to further erode precious Canadian democratic freedoms. If  you want to stop Harper from creating a national "thought police," please write to your local media. We need to let people know what is going on!
