St. Thomas School Newsletter - October 1, 2014

Dear St. Thomas Families,

Welcome to October!  It is difficult to believe, but there are only 16 school days remaining until the end of the first quarter!  This is a good time to check in with your child about their progress.  It is also a great time to log into MSP, our online records system.  Your account access will allow you to review your child's grades and spot any missing assignments.

This is a busy month at St. Thomas with many exciting activities for students and families.  Following is a quick look at the month ahead.

  • On Thursday, October 2, the annual Blessing of the Pets will be held on the front lawn of the rectory at 6:00pm.  All pets are welcome.
  • The Student Council Mass and installation is scheduled for this Friday, October  3,  at 8:15am
  • The Boosters and Mothers' Club will be hosting their second annual Chili Cook-Off on Saturday, October 11, beginning at 6:00pm in the school cafeteria.  This is a family event so bring the kids and a pot of chili.
  • The seventh annual St. Thomas Cake Decorating Contest will be held on Monday, October 13.  Entry forms are due by Wednesday, October 8. Use your imagination and create a cake with a book or reading theme. Prizes will be awarded.
  • Wednesday, October 15, is an early dismissal day for the teachers' monthly staff meeting.  Students will be released at 1:50pm.  Please be sure to make arrangements to pick up your children at the earlier time.
  • Completed entries for the Book Cover Contest are due on Monday, October 20.  Entry forms are available in the office and library.
  • The 2014 Walk-a-thon will be held on Thursday, October 23.  This year's goal is to raise funds to purchase a set of iPads for the classroom.
  • Be sure to make a note in your calendar that the school will be closed on Friday, October 24, for a teacher professional development day.
  • On October 24 the school will hold its eighth annual Barnes & Noble Family Fun Night at the Newport on the Levee location from 6:00-9:00pm. Children are invited to wear their Halloween costumes. Join us for this fun filled evening.
  • Wednesday, October 29, is picture retake day.  A Lifetouch photographer will be on site in the morning.

Please join me in extending a big congratulation to our newly elected Jr. High Student Council officers.  The officers are:

    • President- Emma Browning
    • Vice-President - Mackenzie Eberhart
    • Secretary - Abbie Verst
    • Treasurer - Grant Hemmer

A test message for our emergency contact system, SchoolReach, was sent out last Friday.  Please be sure to contact the school office if you did not receive a phone message. If you received a call, but experienced problems retrieving the message, be sure to review the SchoolReach information flyer in today's folder. The school will use this system to communicate special events such as school closings.  Please contact Mrs. Hug in the office with any change in contact information.

Have a blessed week.

St. Vincent de Paul Holiday Collection

This year in keeping with our "I Can" theme our students will be asked to collect canned goods and other nonperishable items to support the St. Vincent de Paul holiday food drive.

Each homeroom will receive two or three grocery bags with a list of ten Thanksgiving food items attached. They will collect the items and assemble the bags. Older students will be asked to help carry the bags to the parish pantry. Visiting the pantry helps the students to see what an important service St. Vincent de Paul provides for Ft. Thomas residents in need.

Watch for additional information in the October 15 newsletter.

We are looking for exciting items that will generate interest and revenue.  It could be as simple as a gift certificate to a favorite restaurant, tickets to a sporting or cultural event, or the use of your out of town condo for a weekend.

For Silent Auction donations, please contact Elmer Grosser (sttfundraiser@gmail.com, 513-313-9961).

We are also seeking festival sponsors - opportunities from $50 - $1,000 are available. Please contact Jim McMahon at (jimmcmahon86@hotmail.com, 513-476-2176) if you are interested in sponsoring the festival or know of a business that might be interested.
