St. Thomas School Newsletter - October 8, 2014

Dear St. Thomas Families,

St. Thomas school is dedicated to the academic, physical, and spiritual growth and development of every child. Our teachers spend countless hours weekly preparing, delivering lesson and assessing your child's progress. The office, kitchen, custodial, and maintenance staff work diligently to provide healthy meals and a safe learning environment.

Teachers in grades K-6 have recently started implementing two intervention periods into their weekly schedules.  The purpose of these 20-minute blocks of time is twofold.  Students who are struggling with the concepts presented during whole group instruction are provided with an opportunity to work in a small group with the teacher to focus on mastering the necessary concepts.  Secondly, students who understand the material presented are grouped and provided additional opportunities to enrich their understanding by going deeper into the material. These groups will change weekly as children are challenged by or master a concept.

As mentioned in a previous newsletter, our teachers and staff are on the lookout for opportunities to personally recognize the many outstanding attributes in action that our students demonstrate daily. At the end of each month, a student in every class will be selected as Student of the Month for their ongoing conduct in support of the monthly theme.  The theme for the month of September was "I can be Respectful". The following students were selected as the Student of the Month for displaying respectful behavior throughout the month of September.

Targeted service projects, which enrich our Catholic teachings, are a hallmark of our education program. Our sixth grade Tomcats are working together to make a difference in the lives of a local family whose child was born three months premature and is suffering from respiratory issues requiring surgery.  The sixth grade will recycle pop cans to contribute funding to help this family.  Their collection will occur October 13 through October 31.  Check out the article below for more information.

Enjoy the splendor of this tapestry of fall weather! Have a blessed week.

Sixth Grade "I Can" Service Project

The 6th graders at St. Thomas are learning that by working together they can make a difference in the lives of a local family while also helping the environment.

In science class, the 6th grade was learning about natural resources, conservation and ecosystems, when they learned that the Child Development Playcare, a daycare at St. Thomas, is collecting pop cans to help the family of an employee whose first grandson is in the hospital.  Sue Schwab's grandson Hunter Hill, son of Kelsey and Brian, was born 3 months early. Since his birth he has experienced breathing and respiratory problems. He also has some hemorrhaging and may have to have surgery to correct that. The earliest he will be home is November 15th.

The students thought, what a great way to help a family in need and save resources by recycling the pop cans. They will have big containers for empty cans at the St. Thomas plaza entrance and the cafeteria doors during morning drop off.  You can bring in empty cans, drop them in the collection bins and the students will deliver them to be recycled. It starts on October 13th, and ends the 31st of October.

This is a great way for the students to apply what they are learning in science and religion classes and to live out the school theme of the year, "I CAN".
