St. Thomas School Newsletter - November 19, 2014

Dear St. Thomas Families,
The Thanksgiving holiday is fast approaching. Our lives will likely take on a frenetic pace over the next weeks as we prepare to welcome family and guests. During this mad dash, and with the Christmas season not far behind, we can easily lose sight of the real meaning of the holiday.
When I was in my teens, I became aware that the father of my closest friend always appeared to be talking to himself. When he would get out of his chair, climb the stairs, or even open a can, he would mumble quietly to himself. Initially I just wrote it off to being an eccentric "old man". One day I gathered the courage to ask my friend why his father always talked to himself. My friend looked at me with a proud expression and said that his Dad was praying. He shared that his Dad had faced a lot of adversity in his life and that he gave thanks to God each day for the all the blessings he had been given. For him, even getting out of a chair was reason to thank God- for the gift of the chair, for the health to stand, and for life itself.
What a beautiful way to approach life and build a relationship with God. For me, it was truly a lesson in giving thanks for the seemingly insignificant things we tend to take for granted.
As we break bread this Thanksgiving with family and friends, let us all remember to stop and give thanks & praise to God for all the bountiful blessings he has bestowed upon us.
The comfort of a warm home for the holidays is something we often take for granted. For many women and children in Malawi, a home is only a dream. St. Thomas students are working with the Eckerle family to help make this dream a reality by building homes for widows and orphans in Malawi, Africa, through the H.O.W.M.S organization. To build a home it cost $800.00. This buys building equipment and the labor to build a home. The St. Thomas 5th grade is working hard to raise the money. The students are selling paper bricks for $4.00 to help "build" a home. For more information about the H.O.W.M.S organization you can visit their website howms.org
You may have heard through he grapevine that Mrs. Casebolt will be leaving St. Thomas School. She has accepted a job at Bellevue Animal Hospital, and is pursuing a degree as a veterinary technician. Mrs. Casebolt is such a part of the fabric of the school, we will all surely miss her. We wish her all the best as she begins this new chapter in her life. Please see her letter to school families in the newsletter below.
Have a blessed week.

To My St. Thomas Family,
I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of the families and staff from St. Thomas for making me feel so welcome over the past nine years.
On Nov. 26th, I will begin a new chapter in my life, and will be leaving the St. Thomas Cafe.I have been offered a wonderful opportunity to work at the Bellevue Animal Hospital, and to pursue a degree as a veterinary technician. Although this was a very difficult decision for me to make, I feel that it is in the best interests of myself and my family.
Thank you for entrusting me with your children; I have enjoyed laughing with them and watching them grow :) I would like to wish everyone a Blessed Thanksgiving, Christmas, and a safe and Happy New Year!
I will miss you all.
Sincerely,
Tricia Casebolt

Did You Know? 2014 Walk-a-thon Recap
A big Tomcat "thank you" goes out to ALL families for their participation toward our 2014 success. With a few stragglers and matching donations still on the way, we are headed for over $20,000! The greatest portion of the funds will go to support the school's goal purchase of a set of iPads this year, and the remainder will supplement the mother's club annual operating budget which funds programs throughout the school.
HIGHLIGHTS / DID YOU KNOW?
- Each student prepares a unique, handwritten letter for this appeal. Families are receiving a copy of their letter(s) this year. We had 102 out of 115 families K-8 participate by sending in mailing labels! That's fantastic!
- Excepting a few large donations, average sponsorships per student have been about $80.
- This fundraising method allows us to reach beyond the parish base, which may already support other school/parish efforts. We get many donations from out of state family & friends, doctors, dentists, dance teachers, coaches, music teachers, karate instructors, businesses, etc.
- 40% of our returns are in $5 and $10 increments. Every gift counts!
- Student Incentive Contest winners:
- Grades K-2: Gabe Lyons, 33 returns
- Grades 3-5: Madeline Bruns & Jill Bricking, 14 returns
- Grades 6-8: Julia Bunch, 15 returns
SPECIAL THANKS:
- To our 39 families and 11 local business who sponsored T-shirts
- To all volunteers for the letter process, t-shirt process, walk day activities and administrative help
- To Evelyn Pence for this year's t-shirt design. Refresh your St. Thomas parent gear or just grab an extra, available in all sizes just $7. Ask at front office.
- Gratitude for exceptionally generous donations from families or businesses donating $500 or more:
- Grosser/Diefenbacher Greenhouse

Confirmation Service Hours
We have a way in which our Confirmation Candidates can accumulate some Service Hours before the end of the year.
On Saturday, November 29, the Saturday before the 1st Sunday of Advent we need to change the Breaking Bread books in church for the new church year.
If you know of anyone (junior high) who needs some Service Hours have them call the rectory or school office and place their name on the list. There will be a VIRTUS trained adult present.
The time of this "changing of the books" will be Saturday, November 29, after the 8:15 a.m. mass - about 9:00 a.m.
Thank you for your assistance in this project.
