St. Thomas School Newsletter - January 7, 2015

Dear St. Thomas Families,
Happy New Year! I hope that your holidays were filled with the warmth of family and friends. This is the time we typically make New Year's resolutions. I have always looked at the New Year as a time of new beginnings. It is an opportunity to try one new thing for the year. It could be learning to play a guitar, run a marathon, or even venturing into skydiving. Ok that last one I've never attempted - I could never get my head around jumping out of a perfectly good plane!
Trying one new thing is a great way to keep us mentally and physically active and challenge our thinking and view of the world, which can grow stagnant over time.
It is important for institutions to try new things as well. As you know, this year St. Thomas School will be hosting a student delegation from Ecuador. This is part of our new Global Education Initiative. This visiting group of students will be arriving in mid-March and will be here before we know it. We will have a school-wide Welcoming Ceremony when they arrive and a closing Farewell Ceremony on their last day. In between, our students will have the opportunity to learn first hand about the visiting students' country and culture.
Prayer is a powerful vehicle for deepening our relationship with God. New for 2015, we will be placing a book for prayer intentions in the main school lobby. Students are encouraged to write in their own petitions and prayer requests. Teachers are being asked to check the book on a daily basis and incorporate the prayer requests into their classroom prayer.
Our St. Thomas eighth grade students will be receiving the sacrament of Confirmation this week. This is a significant time in these young people's lives as they embrace their faith more fully. On Friday at the basketball tournament, there will be a special 8th grade student recognition ceremony. Please keep these wonderful student leaders in your thoughts and prayers in the coming days!
May this New Year of 2015 provide each of you with new journeys, new goals and the strength to embrace the new challenges that come your way.
Have a blessed week.

First Annual Jr. High Caroling Party
On the evening of Saturday, Dec. 20, a contingent of 20 Jr. High students and parents and a few tag-a-longs met in front of the church to go Christmas caroling.
The group worked its way down Tremont Ave. spreading Christmas cheer. A car even stopped in the street and asked the group to sing a few carols for the little girl in the back seat. The last stop was the St. Thomas rectory where Fr. Johnson and Fr. Ruschman were home and joined in the singing. Fr. Ruschman even accompanied a few tunes on the kazoo!
Afterwards, the two priests, students, and parents relaxed with more singing, hot chocolate, and cookies around a bonfire behind the rectory. What a great evening!
