St. Thomas School Newsletter - January 21, 2015

Dear St. Thomas Families,

Catholic Schools Week begins this Sunday, January 25. We will host our annual Open House from 11:30-1:30pm. This is an opportunity to showcase the many wonderful things we do as a school and a school community.

St Thomas School provides a faith-filled, family oriented atmosphere with small class sizes. Our teachers provide a student-centered approach to instruction effectively addressing the needs of the diverse learning needs of their students. Tools such as interactive whiteboard technology in all the classrooms, and two computer labs, allow technology to be infused in all curricular areas and across all the grade levels.

Learning at St. Thomas is not just restricted to the traditional classroom environment. Service learning is a large part of the St. Thomas experience and is informed by our faith. We have been recognized as a Service Learning School of Contribution for eight years. All students from Pre-K through Grade 8 participate in at least one service project each year. These service projects are student driven and tied to the curriculum.

Our new Global Education Initiative will provide all students with a  first-hand experience with students from other countries. There is a richness to this experience that can't be gleaned from the traditional curriculum and textbooks. Next year we will fully participate in the exchange experience by sending some of our students abroad.

Our very active Booster Club makes it possible for St. Thomas to provide athletic opportunities in basketball, soccer and volleyball for nearly all students.   Other extracurricular activities include Student Council, Academic Team, Scouts and Spirit Club. Our dynamic Mothers' Club provides volunteers and financial support to the school making additional enrichment such as field trips a reality for all students.

We are still in need of parents (and students) to help lead tours of our great school. Having a current parent or student lead a tour can help a prospective parent make a rather tough decision of which school to choose. We match an adult guide with a student guide so prospective families get a complete picture of the school.  Guides are asked to arrive no later than 11:20am. The hours of the Open House are 11:30am-1:30pm. If you can only stay for an hour or so that is OK, too. Click on the following link to sign up:

Additionally, if you know a prospective family, neighbor, family member, etc. (who would not be on the parish mailing list), please email their name/info to Emily Kreutzjans at  emma12@zoomtown.com or 859-250-1733 so we can send them a personal invitation. Thank you in advance for making our Open House a success!

Have a blessed week. Hope to see you at our Open House!

Our Scholastic Book Fair begins this Sunday, January 25. Come to the book fair during our open house from 11:30-1:30. Anyone attending on Sunday will have the opportunity to enter a drawing for a $20 gift certificate to be used at the fair. The fair will also be open Monday through Wednesday of next week.

Please support our school library by purchasing a book for your child. You will also have the opportunity to purchase a book for your child's classroom. Just look for the Teacher Wish List display.

Access our book fair homepage here:

http://bookfairs.scholastic.com/homepage/stthomastomcats

In conjunction with the fair we are participating in the All for Books Program. We are collecting money to purchase books from the fair for our students and classroom libraries. For every dollar collected at St. Thomas, Scholastic Book Fairs will donate a book to the Kids in Need Foundation or Kids in Distressed Situations, Inc. This is a win/win situation. We will be able to purchase books for our students while helping children in need. Please send your donations to the library.

We have another opportunity to earn free Scholastic books for our school library through the Tyson A+ program. It is very easy, just collect the A+ labels on more than 40 Tyson products in both bags and boxes and send them to the library. For every 100 labels submitted between now and March 31, 2015 our school can earn ten free Scholastic books in addition to the usual 24 cents per label. Please spread the word to friends and family. We have only until the end of March to earn free books! Thank you again for your support of our school library.
