St. Thomas School Newsletter - January 28, 2015

Dear St. Thomas Families,

We have had a great Catholic Schools Week so far. With only two days remaining, it is rapidly coming to a close. This Thursday, January 29, is our Faculty and Staff appreciation day. The day begins with a special breakfast for faculty and staff hosted by Student Council. Thursday is also an early dismissal day with students being dismissed at 1:50pm. Teachers will be attending a special celebration and the school will be closed. We ask that you make arrangements to pick up your child promptly after dismissal.

This Friday, January 30, we will honor our volunteers and community with a special all-school Mass at 8:15am. If you are a room mom, cafeteria helper, a classroom helper, kindergarten computer helper, chaperon on a field trip, Olympic Day helper, Walk-a-thon helper, Fitness Testing helper, Academic team helper (to name just a few), we cordially invite you to join us at this special time. We will finish our week with our annual Student/Faculty volleyball game at 1:30pm in the gym. All are welcome to attend. Be sure to check out the Around the School section at the end of the newsletter for a look at photos from this week's events.

On behalf of the entire school I would like to extend a big thank you to the many parents and students who volunteered on Sunday during our Open House and the many Catholic Schools Week activities. The success of our week is due in a large part to the enthusiasm and commitment of these dedicated volunteers!

Grandparent's Day is fast approaching. We will host the day on Friday, February 13. The day begins with an all-school Mass at 8:15am. Immediately following, Grandparents are invited to the school gym for a continental breakfast and slide show.

A flyer is in your Wednesday folder inviting your grandparents to mass, breakfast and participating in the mass that day. Please be sure to RSVP by no later than Thursday, February 5th. If you would like to include pictures of your grandparents for the slideshow, please email to Ms. Schnell at kschn@sttschool.org. Pictures for the slide show are due to the school no later than Friday, February 6. We ask that each family limit the number of photos to four. Group pictures are preferable.

Have a blessed week,

Barry Thomas

Open House Signs

Thanks to all who got the word out about Open House with yard signs. Please return signs to the office this week so we can use them again next year.
Article_11Everybody Counts

The students of St Thomas will be participating in the Everybody Counts program throughout the week of February 2nd. Everybody Counts! is a program designed to teach children about various handicaps and how children with these disabilities cope with them. It also helps our children understand that they don't have to be the best at everything. The goal is to help everyone know the person behind the disability and to create a climate in which we all feel at ease with other people's differences. The areas to be covered include:
  • Blindness (1st grade)
  • Hearing Impairment (2nd grade)
  • Developmentally Handicapped (3rd and 6th grades)
  • Motor Disabilities (4th grade)
  • Learning Disabilities (5th grade)
  • Chronic Conditions (7th grade)
  • Serious Illness  (8th grade)
  • Introduction to Disabilities (Kindergarten)
Each session will provide the children with an opportunity to try to experience what it would be like to cope with the disability. Children will examine aids and appliances associated with the disability and will be given a chance to see and hear videos, books, and tapes, designed to deepen their understanding.

Catholic Order of Foresters

Many people ask, "What is the Catholic Order of Foresters?" It is a fundraiser at St. Thomas that we participate in every month. For just $25 per year you receive $10,000 of life insurance for your child. There is no additional cost.

For a small price we can make a big impact. The first $25 you pay for a pathways policy, the school receives $25. In addition, twice a month we sponsor events. If your child is a Forester member and they sign in at the event, the school receives $4.00 per signature. So far we have made over $20,000 with this simple fundraiser and your child can be part of it. It is a win for the school, the students, and your family. Plus it provides security for you.

For questions or to learn how to participate, contact Robin Holtz at rholt@sttschool.org or Heather Murphy at hmurphy@fuse.net or 781-2609.

Our Scholastic Book Fair began this Sunday, January 25.  The fair will also be open Monday through Wednesday of this week.

Please support our school library by purchasing a book for your child. You will also have the opportunity to purchase a book for your child's classroom. Just look for the Teacher Wish List display.

Access our book fair homepage here:

http://bookfairs.scholastic.com/homepage/stthomastomcats

In conjunction with the fair we are participating in the All for Books Program. We are collecting money to purchase books from the fair for our students and classroom libraries. For every dollar collected at St. Thomas, Scholastic Book Fairs will donate a book to the Kids in Need Foundation or Kids in Distressed Situations, Inc. This is a win/win situation. We will be able to purchase books for our students while helping children in need. Please send your donations to the library.

We have another opportunity to earn free Scholastic books for our school library through the Tyson A+ program. It is very easy, just collect the A+ labels on more than 40 Tyson products in both bags and boxes and send them to the library. For every 100 labels submitted between now and March 31, 2015 our school can earn ten free Scholastic books in addition to the usual 24 cents per label. Please spread the word to friends and family. We have only until the end of March to earn free books! Thank you again for your support of our school library.
