How to Fix a Broken High Schooler, in Four Easy Steps

Last week Freakonomics radio podcast aired an episode titled, "How to Fix a Broken High Schooler, in Four Easy Steps." This particular episode showcased the Pathways to Education program based out of Regent Park CHC.

The episode details how the program came to be - how much it costs, what it entails, and how replicable it may be. And, most important, what all this means for the rest of us - for every student, parent, or educator who's looking for a way to improve the educational system.

Oral health questions at Queen's Park

Following questions raised by NDP Health Critic France Gelinas, Minister of Health Eric Hoskins has committed to ensure "...that no child will lose access to preventive dental services that they are currently eligible to receive." Under the planned integration of dental programs for low income children access to the Children in Need of Treatment (CINOT) program would have been reduced.

ODSP medical reviews planned

Does your centre see many people on ODSP? If so, you should know that the Ministry of Community and Social Services will be significantly increasing the number of medical reviews done each month, starting in April 2015. This means many more people will receive notices that their disability status is being reviewed an the physicians/NPs at your centre may start seeing a sudden increase in the number of people wanting an appointment for a medical and completion of ODSP forms.

5As of Health Pregnancy Weigh Gain survey

Do you provide care to pregnant women in your practice? Researchers from the University of Alberta are conducting a short online survey to get a better understanding of the barriers and challenges health care providers may experience related to gestational weight gain, and about what may help and support them to help women achieve healthy weights during pregnancy. Participants will also be asked to assess the strengths and limitations of the 5As of Healthy Pregnancy Weight GainTM, a new resource from the Canadian Obesity Network.

This information will help to inform the development of universal strategies that promote healthy dietary intake and appropriate weight management in pregnancy and postpartum.
