Premier Wynne visits Somerset West Community Health Centre
On Monday November 24, Premier Wynne joined by Ottawa Centre MPP Yasir Naqvi, visited the Somerset West Community Health Centre. The purpose of the Premier's visit was to show her the kind of programs that a CHC has to offer. Premier Wynne heard from several front line staff including nurse practitioners, community health workers and harm reduction staff with peer workers; people with the lived experience of addictions. She heard powerful personal stories about the lives of people with mental health and addictions issues. She also heard loud and clear that everyone matters and that SWCHC like other CHCs, serve the most vulnerable. She readily engaged the nurse practitioners who spoke to the effectiveness of the interprofessional practice model and how clinical staff are able to work to their full scope of practice in our team based model.
She stated in her closing remarks that she was impressed by the breadth and depth of the different programs that SWCHC has on offer. She also marveled at how the staff at SWCHC embrace the complexity of many different programs working together to not only provide quality primary health care but to build healthy communities as well.

Government puts the brakes on medical tourism
Following public calls from AOHC, RNAO, Canadian Doctors for Medicare and the Association of Ontario Midwives, Health Minister Hoskins has taken action and asked Ontario hospitals not to enter into any new contracts that include medical treatment of foreign nationals.
AOHC CEO Adrianna Tetley stated, "We're very pleased with the direction in which Minister Hoskins is heading. Medical tourism undermines our universal, publicly funded, not- for- profit health system and we will keep working on this issue until there is a complete ban."

Ontario's Mental Health and Addiction Strategy
On Nov 25th, the MOHLTC launched the next phase of Ontario's Mental Health and Addiction Strategy. The first phase of this strategy was introduced in 2011 which focused primarily on children and youth mental health. In the next phase, the strategy is expanding to support transition between youth and adult services, reducing wait times, and forming a Leadership Council that will advise the government on the strategy's investments, and promoting collaboration across sectors. AOHC met with the lead Assistant Deputy Minister to discuss the role of our members and the importance of integrating primary care into a provincial mental health strategy.

| Support the call for the Ontario Centre of Excellence in Environmental Health
Over 568,000 people in Ontario have been diagnosed with chronic, complex environmental illnesses -they can't get the healthcare they need because diagnosis and treatment of these serious conditions are not currently available. AOHC has been working for the past few years with the Myalgic Encephalomyelitis Association of Ontario (MEAO) to urge MOHLTC to support an Ontario Centre of Excellence in Environmental Health to provide appropriate care.
Add your voice by sending this letter to Health Minister Hoskins and your MPP.

Do you believe Ontario should pursue revenue raising to cut the deficit and ensure the Ontario government has the funds required to invest in poverty reduction and the public services we need for community health and wellbeing? If so, what are some strategic tax increases that Finance Minister Sousa could make in his next budget?
