Premier's directions to Ministers now public
Our review of the new mandate letters sent September 25th from the Premier to her Ministers indicate opportunities for AOHC and members to make our case regarding our vision for primary health care and the need to shift the focus upstream. Highlights of the directions to Minister Hoskins include:
-
achieve an accountable, efficient and transparent system;
-
build a culture of health and community wellness;
-
promote healthier lifestyles for people through shared responsibility across government;
-
develop a policy on community hubs that reflect health and wellness;
-
ensure everyone in Ontario has a primary care provider, and the system has the required health human resources;
-
invest in community infrastructure to help shift care from hospitals to community settings.

Stop medical tourism in Ontario
AOHC is opposed to medical tourism - for profit hospital care targeted to patients arriving from outside Canada based on their ability to pay. AOHC has a firm commitment to a not-for-profit, publicly funded health system and is concerned that medical tourism represents a shift to for-profit, private health care.
AOHC has joined with the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) and other health provider organizations to call for the Ontario government to ban medical tourism.
