AOHC receives Ontario Trillium Foundation grant to continue CIW initiative
Great news! The AOHC proposal for another Ontario Trillium Foundation grant has been accepted. The grant is $749,100 in total and will be disbursed over a three year period. As a result of this funding AOHC will continue to build on the strong foundation developed during the first phase of our OTF funded CIW work. The official public announcement will come on July 24th so until then, please consider this internal news.
With this grant we plan to:
-
Grow the number of CIW early adopters amongst our member centres. There are over 30 centres now involved in this work. If your centre is interested in finding out about applications of the CIW, please contact: Gary Machan at gary@aohc.org
-
Increase and improve community based collaborative initiatives designed to improve health and wellbeing.
-
Enhance the ability of our member centres to deliver community development services
-
Align the CIW framework with our model of health and wellbeing and develop CIW survey tools
-
Lead a province-wide conversation with decision makers and likeminded organizations about how the CIW can be used to measure and build community health & wellbeing.
These efforts are an important part of our larger strategy to Shift the Conversation to Community Health & Wellbeing. They will enable us to lead by example and shine the spotlight on our Model of Health & Wellbeing and its powerful potential to improve population health and advance health equity.
Learn more: If you would like to learn more, please join us at the Community Health & Wellbeing Summer Institute.
The Institute will present panel discussions, learning sessions and a wide range of other interactive presentations where attendees will focus on exploring the Canadian Index of Wellbeing and how it can help to design and identify Community Initiatives and programs that get to the root causes of illness and improve community health and wellbeing. There are a few spots available
Note: Preparations for Community Health and Wellbeing Week are underway. Please take notice of the date change to October 5-11th. We will highlight findings from the CIW's 2014 Ontario composite report and how our member centres are meeting the needs identified.

Date change for Annual Health Promoters Professional Learning Event
Due to the date change of Community Health and Wellbeing Week, the date for the upcoming Health Promoters Professional Learning Event has moved to Tuesday, October 21 and Wednesday, October 22. This is the fifth annual professional learning event for health promoters. To celebrate we are planning a highly engaged knowledge-sharing event featuring spotlight sessions on promising practices (10 minute presentations) from around the province. Health promoters from CHCs, AHACs, NPLCs and CFHTs are now invited to send a title short description of the promising practice they want to share at the PLE. Please complete the short survey to submit your proposed promising practice presentation. The timeline for submissions is Wednesday, August 6th. You will receive an email confirmation about your proposed presentation by Friday, August 29th. As an added incentive all presenters are eligible for a 15% discount on their registration. Registrations will open before the end of July 31 with a proposed detailed agenda included. For more information please write to Wendy Banh, wendy@aohc.org.

Ontario budget released
For AOHC members this is a good news budget with increased funding of $270 million for the community health sector, expansion of the community capital fund to $300 million over 10 years for infrastructure, and a number of measures addressing the determinants of health that will benefit many people on low income. Of the increased funding for community health, $65 million will go towards mental health and addiction services and programs. AOHC will advocate that part of the remaining $205 million increase be allocated to community governed primary health care organizations to address operating pressures and cost of living adjustments.
Ontario's new Poverty Reduction Strategy will be introduced within two months and will include expansion of health benefits (prescription drugs, vision care and mental health services) to all low income children. The budget commits to make health and dental benefits available to all low income Ontarians over the next ten years.
