Stop the cuts to refugee healthcare
Reps from AOHC and local CHCs attended the large rally in downtown Toronto on June 16 to call on the federal government to reverse the cuts to the Interim Federal Health program.
Many physicians and nurses shared firsthand stories of how this policy change is having damaging effects on some of the most vulnerable people in our communities - such as pregnant women who have no access to care, and refugees with cancer and diabetes who cannot afford medications. Dr David McKeown spoke of the risk to public health when refugees from Designated Countries of Origin (eg Hungary, Mexico) are no longer eligible for any health coverage and may suffer from infectious diseases. |

Liberal majority for Ontario
The June 12th election returned Premier Kathleen Wynne to office with a majority Liberal government. Their platform included a number of commitments where we see strong opportunities for AOHC members to play a key role: the planned 'Community Wellness and Culture of Health Strategy' and the promise to expand access to primary health care providers. The Legislature will re-open July 2nd with a budget to be tabled within 20 days. This budget will be the same/ similar to the May budget which included $270 million increased funding for the community health sector for 2014/15, and a new $300 million capital fund over ten years for renewal and expansion of community health infrastructure. We also expect implementation of budget measures relating to poverty reduction.
It's widely expected there will be a new Minister of Health & Long Term Care - AOHC will seek a meeting once announced to hear about her/his priorities and discuss how our members can contribute. More information on the Liberal healthcare platform |
