Spark a conversation!
Send your message to our conference

We want to hear from people and communities across the province with their ideas on how we can all work better together preventing more so we can treat less.

This is your chance to make sure the message that is most important to you gets heard during the conference.

Share your vision for working together upstream on the broad determinants of health to reduce health disparities. Voice your opinion on the next steps that Public Health and Primary Health Care need to take together in order to build strong and successful collaborations, now and for the future!

It's easy to participate

On a large piece of paper record your answers to these two questions:

  1. How do we Prevent More to Treat Less?
  2. What is the secret to working better together?
  • Take a photo of yourself holding your response.  If possible, do it in a setting that complements your message. eg. If your message is about the importance of green spaces, take a picture outdoors. If your message is about the importance of neighbourhoods, show your neighbourhood in the background.
  • Submit your photo at: www.facebook.com/AOHC.ACSO or www.twitter.com/AOHC_ACSO with the hashtag #PMTL2014

Photo submissions will be collected, combined and featured together at the Prevent More to Treat Less | Public Health and Primary Health Care Together joint conference. They will also be circulated via the conference's social media channels.

2014 Ontario election
Party platforms on health issues

AOHC is currently monitoring commitments made by party leaders on various issues relating to healthcare.

The Progressive Conservatives would put local healthcare decision making (LHINs) into the hand of nurses, doctors, community care organizations and hospitals, and call these Health Hubs. Instead of bureaucrats they want care coordination (CCAC) done by healthcare delivery organizations, with frontline caregivers serving as care coordinators for high needs patients. Expand choice and competition; e.g. more specialty clinics that provide routine surgeries.

The NDP focus to date is on cutting ER wait times in half by: creating 50 new 24-hour family health clinics (i.e. CHCs and AHACs); and hiring 250 new NPs to treat ER patients faster. The NDP would fund 1,400 new long-term care spaces, expand home care support, and guarantee access to home care within five days of being approved.

The Liberals would expand the power of RNs to prescribe medications and NPs to order tests, such as CT scans, ultrasounds, MRIs and X-rays.

Invite local candidates to your centre

The Registered Nurses Association of Ontario is inviting political candidates to shadow RNs and NPs at work to learn firsthand about their work on the frontline at CHCs, NPLCs and other healthcare facilities. It's a great nonpartisan way to introduce the people who are running to be your MPP to your Centre.

If you would like to participate before June 10th, please email jacquie@aohc.org.

Aboriginal Awareness Week

Celebrate the cultures and contributions of Aboriginal peoples during Aboriginal Awareness Week (AAW) from May 20 to 23, 2014. AAW was first introduced in 1992 with the purpose of increasing awareness of Aboriginal peoples within the federal public service. Since that time, it has evolved and grown into a government-wide celebration that gives federal public servants from across Canada the opportunity to participate in a week of interactive activities that honour the diverse cultures and traditions of the Métis, Inuit and First Nation peoples.
