Health groups urge Premier Wynne to stop medical tourism

Recent remarks by Ontario's Minister of Health indicating unqualified support for medical tourism have prompted AOHC and four other health organizations to urge Premier Kathleen Wynne to step in and end the practice of allowing hospitals to solicit patients from other countries.

In the letter, the groups warn that allowing hospitals to go shopping for patients in a bid to raise revenue will redirect already stretched resources and jeopardize the province's ability to provide care for Ontarians.

India court recognizes transgendered people as third gender

India's Supreme Court has recognized transgender people as a third gender, in a landmark ruling.

In 2009, India's Election Commission took a first step by allowing transgenders to choose their gender as "other" on ballot forms.

But India is not the first country to recognize a third gender. Nepal recognized a third gender as early as in 2007 when the Supreme Court ordered the government to scrap all laws that discriminated on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. And last year, Bangladesh also recognized a third gender.

Take action to pass new minimum wage legislation

Take 2 minutes to let your MPP know you want him/her to support new legislation under debate at Queens Park that could improve working conditions and wages for hundreds of thousands of low income Ontarians.

If passed these new laws would: increase minimum wage, crack down on temp agencies, regulate migrant worker recruiters, stop wage theft and make it easier for workers to form unions.
