Public Health and Primary Health Care Together Awards
The Association of Local Public Health Agencies (alPHa) and AOHC, along with several of our conference partners, will be presenting three additional joint conference awards. These awards are in addition to the AOHC Awards and will be presented during the conference plenary sessions.
Nominations are now being accepted for the following joint awards:
- Champion for Public Health and Primary Health Care
- Innovation in Public Health and Primary Health Care Award
- Media Award
The deadline for joint award nominations is Monday, April 7, 2014.

Call for speakers for Nightingale Connects 2014
Nightingale Connects 2014 will take place in downtown Toronto from October 17 to 19, 2014 at the Sheraton Centre. Nightingale is reaching out for stories and healthcare expertise to share with those attending NCON14.
If this sparks your interest:

Provide a brief outline that presents the story or specific healthcare expertise that you would like to share at NCON14 (this doesn't have to be more than a paragraph or bullet point form)

Provide the story/topic successes and challenges,

Or provide some background on the current status of the centre or how you overcame any challenges.
Participants who lead one of the case study sessions at NCON14 will receive free registration.
Proposals for breakout speaking sessions are due by April 11th, 2014.

Model of Health and Wellbeing webcast available online
Orientation to the Model of Health and Wellbeing webcast now available in French and English. Staff, board members and volunteers from CHCs, AHACs, NPLCs and CFHTs gain an understanding about the Model of Health and Wellbeing and the principles, values and attributes that it captures.
The Model of Health and Wellbeing is very important to comprehend and embrace. It is our common understanding and commitment to who we are and what we do. It is our strategic commitment to a shared vision of the best possible health and wellbeing for everyone in Ontario.

Building partnerships to help finance social enterprises in Ontario
On March 18, 2014, the Ontario Ministry of Economic Development, Trade and Employment launched a Call for Proposals in connection with the new $4 million Social Enterprise Demonstration Fund (SEDF). The Ministry is seeking proposals from eligible not-for-profit intermediary organizations who are looking to pilot new social finance initiatives that will benefit early-stage social enterprises at the community level, and create jobs.

Ontario pulls the plug on private blood clinics
Ontario has announced it intends to introduce legislation to stop private clinics that pay for blood donations in order to protect the province blood and plasma donation system.

Rethinking pharmacare in Canada
Canada's provincial pharmacare systems have flaws not found in other developed countries that could be addressed by integrating prescription drug coverage into the broader healthcare system, according to a report released by the C.D. Howe Institute. In "Rethinking Pharmacare in Canada," authors Steven Morgan, Jamie Daw and Michael Law find that integrating pharmaceuticals into the healthcare system by covering medically necessary prescription drugs at little cost to patients would result in improved performance on key pharmacare policy goals.

The Physical Activity Resource Centre (PARC) has designed a short survey to capture high level information about the programs your organization leads or participates in with respect to the prevention of type 2 diabetes and/or obesity.
Please circulate this request to anyone working in your organization or other community agencies that offer such health promotion programs to adults, children and youth and specific populations.

AOHC is offering its member centres the opportunity to participate in a free ½-day workshop exploring the relationship between our Model of Health and Wellbeing, the AODA (Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act), and ways to improve access and communication for clients with various disabilities.
