Shine a spotlight on oral health

Does your CHC/AHAC want to spread the message that the government should be expanding access to dental care for low income people?

Here's an idea developed by Davenport-Perth CHC and Bridges CHC:
  • Conduct a survey of your clients and community to find out what their needs are for affordable dental services
  • Let your local media know
  • Publish the results and share them with your MPP

Making Healthier Choices Act

Health Minister Deb Matthews introduced Bill 162 in the Legislature on February 24th, the Making Healthier Choices Act, which would mandate calorie labelling on restaurant menus as part of the government's Healthy Kids Strategy to combat childhood obesity. But the Bill does not go as far as Private Member's Bill 149 introduced by NDP Health Critic France Gélinas last week. It would require chain restaurants to provide menu information on calorie count and high sodium content of food.

AOHC has joined 40 groups and experts in endorsing a joint statement by the Centre for Science in the Public Interest which calls for both sodium and calorie level information to be provided on restaurant menus.
Seniors Community Grant Program accepting applications

The Ontario government is now accepting applications from not-for-profit community groups to fund projects that help seniors stay connected and involved in their community by encouraging greater social inclusion, volunteerism and community engagement.

The Seniors Community Grant Program is the province's first grant program dedicated solely to seniors and will fund projects that provide seniors with opportunities to connect, contribute, learn and lead active lives.

Applications and guidelines are now available at the Older Adult Centres' Association of Ontario.
Phase two report of Regent Park revitalization study now available

The Centre for Research on Inner City Health, in partnership with Toronto Community Housing (TCH), is surveying adults and children who are TCH residents before and after the Regent Park revitalization process.

The study asks questions about a wide range of things that can affect people's wellbeing, such as feelings of safety and security, social relationships, sense of community and health behaviours.

Service Provision Forum: Women's Housing Stability, Health and Wellbeing

The Centre for Research on Inner City talked to 41 women in Ontario about their experiences with partner violence, housing stability and health. Now, they are sharing the results with service providers across Ontario including housing, health care, public health, justice and social services.
