Prevent More to Treat Less | Public Health and Primary Health Care Conference

 

Momentum is building for the June 4 & 5 joint Public Health and Primary Health Care conference. This ground breaking conference will be focused on the shared vision of promoting the best possible health and wellbeing for everyone living in Ontario. A wide range of topics will be covered within 3 overarching themes: Best Practices for Keeping People and Communities Healthy; Working Upstream to Promote Community Health and Wellbeing; and Making Primary Health Care and Public Health Relationships More Sustainable.

 

The conference will take place June 4 & 5, 2014 at the Sheraton Parkway Toronto North. It will include inspiring presentations, panel discussions, think tanks, learning and networking sessions that will enable representatives from both sectors to learn from each other and share best collaborative practices, and move forward on shared priorities.

 

Online submissions will be accepted until this Friday, February 7th.

Support Queen's Park Bill calling for calorie and sodium disclosure on menus

 

A vote on Ontario Bill 149 is scheduled in the Ontario legislature for February 20. This Bill, introduced by MPP France Gélinas, seeks amendments to two Acts in order to ban flavoured tobacco products, and require large restaurants to display calorie and sodium content information for food on their menus.

 

Add your support by emailing your MPP indicating you would like him/her to vote for Bill 149.

Scheduled maintenance for QIP Navigator

 

Health Quality Ontario (HQO) will be closing the QIP Navigator for scheduled maintenance on February 7, 2014. The QIP Navigator will remain closed until noon on February 10, 2014.

Ontario's pre-budget consultations

 

Finance Minister Sousa is holding meetings across the province as part of pre-budget consultations. AOHC made a presentation in Toronto on February 3. One question the Minister is asking is: how to eliminate the deficit? New research from the Ontario office of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives notes that Ontario has lost $19 billion/year in tax revenue due to tax cuts made since the mid-1990s. They argue it's time to rebuild Ontario's fiscal capacity to invest in public services, and they present a range of tax options.

Rollout of community-based specialty clinics

 

As part of Ontario's Action Plan for Healthcare, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, the LHINS and Cancer Care Ontario are working together to rollout Community-based specialty clinics, which will initially focus on low-risk cataract and colonoscopy services. In the future, additional procedures that do not require overnight stays in a hospital will be eligible to be performed in specialty clinics. Community-based specialty clinics will be required to be non-profit Independent Health Facilities, or established as a hospital site under the Public Hospitals Act.
