Ontario expanding electronic health records
Ontario is making progress on its commitment to ensure every Ontarian has an electronic health record by expanding their use into 90 community-based health care clinics, giving 500,000 people access to an electronic health record.
Forty-five of Ontario's 90 Association of Ontario Health Centre member clinics, including Community Health Centres, Nurse-Practitioner-Led Clinics and Aboriginal Health Access Centres, have already added electronic health records into their practice.

Support pre-budget ask to Ontario government on housing supports
Last year the Ontario government eliminated the Community Start-Up and Maintenance Benefit (CSUMB), which helped people receiving social assistance cover unexpected housing costs and remain housed. Fifty percent of the funding went instead to municipalities to provide housing and homelessness prevention supports.
In response to community advocacy the province gave municipalities a one-time allocation of $42 million to ease the transition. AOHC and 27 other organizations are now urging the province to make this funding permanent in the next budget. Add your voice to the call by modifying and sending this letter. Encourage your local council to send a similar letter.

It's about time for nurse practitioners
With advanced nursing degrees and extra training and experience, nurse practitioners are helping Canadians get more access to quality health care. In community clinics, health care centres, doctors' offices, nursing homes, hospitals and emergency departments, nurse practitioners diagnose and manage illnesses like diabetes, order and interpret tests, write prescriptions and a whole lots more. Send this letter to urge your member of parliament to increase the number of nurse practitioners in your area. |

2013 Ontario report card on child & family poverty
This new Campaign 2000 report notes Ontario's child poverty rate declined by 9.2% between 2008-2011, highlighting the effectiveness of targeted initiatives under Ontario's Poverty Reduction Strategy. Without it about 55,000 more children would have been living in poverty in 2011, the most recent year for which data is available. But with 1 in every 7 children in Ontario living in poverty, the report calls for government investment in decent employment, improved child benefits, affordable housing, livable social assistance rates and child care.
Take action! Sign the petition to tell your MPP that Ontario's new strategy should include significant increases in social assistance rates, the minimum wage, and investment in affordable housing. Initiated by 25 in 5 Network, Poverty Free Ontario and Social Planning Network of Ontario. |

Tax is not a 4 letter word....
At our last AGM AOHC passed a resolution calling on the Ontario government to pursue revenue raising measures through a progressive tax system to ensure we have sufficient public revenues to fund healthcare, poverty reduction measures and social services.
Do we have a tax system that is fair and efficient? Check out a new book Tax is Not a Four Letter Word by former Secretary to the federal Cabinet, Alex Himelfarb, who challenges the view that "any tax is a bad tax" and provides broad directions for fairer and smarter approaches to taxation.
The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives is sponsoring a book tour in 2014. Click here for updates.
