Poverty making Canadians sick

The Canadian Medical Association's nationwide consultation with Canadians about the social determinants of health has delivered a clear message: poverty is the main issue that must be addressed to improve the health of Canadians and eliminate health inequities.

The report, What Makes Us Sick?, was prepared following a series of six town-hall meetings and an online consultation that attracted more than 1,000 participants.

The study said 3.9 million Canadians were affected and the 330,000 households that were "severely food insecure" were worried they would run out of food before being able to afford more.
