A GRAND NEW CENTRE
Grand River Community Health Centre opens it's doors

Grand River Community Health Centre (GRCHC) opened the doors of their new home yesterday with a celebration that included a walking tour, featured community programs and delicious healthy food prepared in the sparkling new community kitchen.

Speaking at the ribbon cutting were Ontario Minister of Health and Long-term Care Deb Matthews , Brantford MPP Dave Levac, Peter Szota, Executive Director of GRCHC and Brantford Mayor Chris Friel.

Negotiations for the project initially began in 2006 and involved coordinating many pieces, including moving into an interim space a few doors away.  The opening was a tremendous success!

Considering setting up a dental suite?

If you have new capital funding and are starting your construction plans you should consider setting aside a room for 1-2 dental operatories with the correct wiring and plumbing. Contact Jacquie Maund at AOHC for a list of dental equipment needed and their cost, plus space requirements. This material is provided by Toronto Public Health based on fitting out their dental suites. A list of useful articles and resources for setting up a publicly funded dental suite is also available.

Do you want to "grow your own" nurse practitioner?

Your centre/clinic may be interested in this government program to help you fill vacancies among NP positions. The program allows you to use Ministry funds  to sponsor a local RN to obtain his/her NP education. The funding is used to pay the RN's salary while in school, and in exchange the new NP must agree to a return of service commitment to your centre/clinic.

Improving primary healthcare through collaboration

The existing and future health care needs of the Canadian population are largely about managing chronic conditions. Better management of patients with chronic conditions in the primary care system can reduce the burden in the more costly acute or hospital care system. If the enhanced use of interprofessional primary care (IPC) teams can be shown to be cost-effective, they should become the preferred model of care for chronic conditions in all provinces and territories.

The Conference Board of Canada has released Briefing 3 - Measuring the Missed Opportunity which aims to assess whether IPC teams could become a central component of a health care services delivery strategy for chronic conditions. It provides the results of an empirical analysis of the impact of enhanced IPC teams on the health and economic burden of Type 2 diabetes and depression in Canada.
