The Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health in Ottawa celebrated the official opening of its newly expanded building on May 9.
"Tonight is about a grand story," said Executive Director Allison Fisher to a captivated crowd. "It takes foresight to know that space isn't just bricks and mortar-it is beauty. It revolves around optimism. It is a trust in the power of space to humanize us, to protect and enrich us."
From the undulating glass to the fluid steps of its new entrance, water is the theme that flows through this spectacular space, designed by Douglas Cardinal and built under the oversight of Bret Cardinal and Mark Conley.
The landmark facility will offer enhanced maternal wellness services and social enterprise initiatives. The centre will also be a hub for culturally-based education for health professionals and the broader community to work with Aboriginal people.

Show your support for the Ontario budget
AOHC has been monitoring events at Queens Park and has been informed that that it is not guaranteed that the NDP will support the budget.
We believe that this budget contains a number of good measures for our sectors and for the people we serve: increased funding for community-based health care; increases to social assistance rates; positive changes to social assistance rules; and commitment to keep investing in poverty reduction and community health care.
These will all be put at risk if the NDP does not support the budget and we are thrown into a provincial election.
Please have your say and let our voices be heard.
Andrea Horwath has clearly indicated she wants to hear the public's views. So please take 2 minutes to let her know whether you think this budget should be passed or not. If your MPP is NDP please email him/her too.
