CHC model of care part of solution to rein in health care costs

 

About 12,000 people in the Windsor, Sarnia and  Chatham area cost the region more than half a billion dollars a year in health care.

 

Statistics presented to the board of the Erie St. Clair Local Health Integration Network on Tuesday show one per cent of the population - about 1,770 people - in Erie St. Clair use an average of $102,000 health care dollars each per year.

The Nutrition Resource Centre, an initiative of the Ontario Public Health Association, is developing a resource on food skills programming throughout Ontario.


They need your help!


They are conducting an environmental scan of current food skills programs in community health centres, public health units and others.


Please take 5 minutes to complete their survey before March 8.

New report on precarious work

 

More than 50% of jobs in Toronto and Hamilton are unstable, temporary or part-time, according to a new report, It's More than Poverty: Employment Precarity and Household Well-beingreleased this week by the United Way and McMaster University.  Based on interviews with more than 4,000 workers, the report documents the significant impact precarious work has on workers' health, family well-being and community life.

Learning Goals:

  • Enhance full scope of practice utilization by supporting primary care nurses to regain/develop confidence in their competencies, knowledge and skills, using the Primary Care Nurse Task Force role descriptions/recommendations as a guide
  • Equip primary care nurses with the tools, resources and supports required to care for the highly complex health/social needs of Ontarians within primary care
  • Provide opportunities for exploration, discussion and application of primary health care nursing knowledge and expertise in the context of the Ontario health system
  • Incorporate a rural/remote focus as a component of primary care as relevant

Researchers seeking input regarding pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV prevention

 

Researchers at St. Michael's Hospital, in collaboration with the Hassle Free Clinic and Canadian AIDS Treatment Information Exchange (CATIE), are conducting a research study addressing the knowledge, beliefs and learning needs of physicians regarding pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, for HIV prevention. We are looking for family physicians, infectious diseases specialists, public health physicians, or internists practicing in Canada. Prior knowledge of PrEP is NOT REQUIRED. There is a chance to win an iPad or one of five $20 gift certificates to Chapters/Indigo!

The Health Council of Canada's recent bulletin, How do Canadian primary care physicians rate the health system? is based on the findings in the 2012 Commonwealth Fund International Health Policy Survey of Primary Care Physicians, that surveyed over 10,000 doctors in Canada and nine other countries.

Meeting health needs of migrant farm workers - Hamilton - March 25

 

Nearly 40,000 migrant farmworkers (MFWs) come to Canada each year to work in the agriculture industry, the majority in Ontario. The health of these workers is strongly influenced by their experience of migration, their living and work environments once they arrive, and their access to health care and health and safety support.

Tel qu'annoncé dans le bulletin du 24 janvier 2012, le premier Colloque francophone des CSC a eu lieu le 15 novembre 2012 à Sudbury. Durant ce rassemblement, les intervenants dans le domaine de la santé mentale ont identifié plusieurs besoins, dont celui de créer un réseau d'échange d'information et de soutien. À cet effet une première rencontre de réseautage via OTN est planifiée le 26 mars 2013 de 9 h à 11 h.
