Premier Wynne delivers throne speech

AOHC's Policy and Government Relations Lead, Jacquie Maund, attended the February 19th opening of the Legislature. There was a sense of renewal and optimism with the press gallery full and many guests in attendance. Premier Wynne was beaming in white, while Steve Paikin stood texting and tweeting away in the upper gallery.
A key message is that the government wants to work collaboratively with all parties. The speech called for opportunity for all, without people slipping through the cracks. It promised a balanced approach to a balanced budget, but committed to restraining program spending until the deficit is under control. The Liberals have clearly heard all of the NDP's budget asks for the throne speech promised action on youth unemployment, reducing auto insurance rates, allowing people on social assistance to keep more of their earnings, and increasing the employment health tax thresholds.
On the health front, this government is committed to health promotion and patient-centred care- themes which AOHC strongly supports. They will expand access to home care and increase access to mental health supports. The speech promised action on the Seniors Strategy and Health Links. And they committed to keep expanding early learning and childcare.
Next steps: Preparation for the spring budget and advocacy to ensure that it includes the investments in community-governed health care and poverty reduction that AOHC wants to see.
