Forty centres get cleaner data
2013 was off to a good start as far as the Business Intelligence Reporting Tool (BIRT) team was concerned. A recent data remediation exercise involving about 40 member sites was successful, with big improvements for almost all participating sites.
The exercise was undertaken after several centres expressed doubt over the completeness and/or accuracy of their historical data. An initial analysis of the earlier data had shown unacceptable rates of variance well in excess of the 3% variance target set by the sector.
Suspecting that some of this variance could be due to duplicity or omissions, the BIRT team invited centres to re-submit their data for further analysis and problem solving. A rigorous, remedial process of checks was then applied to the newly re-submitted data.
The exercise proved extremely useful as it helped to resolve many data quality issues and significantly lowered the variance rate for most participating centres.
More importantly, this episode demonstrated clearly that BIRT as a reporting tool is viable and functional when the data submitted to BIRT is complete and clean.
The BIRT team will continue to work hard to ensure that BIRT becomes the authoritative data source for the sector in future reporting requirements.
Centers interested in reviewing their results and exploring this process are encouraged to contact birt@aohc.org

Update from Queens Park
In a letter to Premier Wynne, NDP Leader Andrea Horwath has identified five initiatives that she wants to see in the spring budget. On health issues, she calls for $30 million to CCACs to eliminate home care waitlists and add capacity to the system so that all Ontarians who need home care can receive it within 5 days. Other measures include: a youth employment program, allowing people on social assistance to keep $200 of their earnings before clawbacks, a 15% cut to auto insurance rates, and closing a number of corporate tax loopholes.
