The next premier... and poverty reduction
Ontario's new premier will be chosen this weekend at the Liberal leadership convention. No matter who wins - Kathleen Wynne and Sandra Pupatello are in the lead going in - it's already a "win" of a sort that all candidates have pledged to act on poverty in the province.
AOHC is an active member of the 25in5 Network for Poverty Reduction which, as part of advocacy work with all political parties, asked all the leadership candidates what each would do to advance Ontario's Poverty Reduction Strategy and meet the 2013 target to cut child and family poverty by 25%.
Results from the questionnaire reveal that most candidates are pledging action on income security, affordable housing and good jobs.
Frontrunners Kathleen Wynne and Sandra Pupatello both made significant commitments in the areas of income security, welfare reform, and affordable housing. Eric Hoskins and Gerard Kennedy stood out as the candidates with the most comprehensive approaches to poverty reduction, vowing to increase minimum wage, reform social assistance and increase access to affordable housing.
Help spread the word and tweet the findings using hashtag #25in5.ca. Other hashtags to use: for liberal leadership race - #olpldr Ontario Politics - #onpoli
Stay tuned: The Ontario budget is now being developed. 25in5 is designing a pre-budget campaign with actions you can take to call on the 3 party leaders to make minority government work by implementing changes that allow people to: Earn More. Keep More. Restore. Reduce Poverty in Ontario

Progressive Conservatives release policy paper on social assistance
The Progressive Conservatives released their policy paper on social assistance last week. Entitled Welfare to Work, they do not call for a rate increase. The PCs propose a debit card for food purchases, and a reduced benefit level for people who are able to work and have been on assistance for a long time. They support the Lankin/Sheikh report recommendation for one social assistance program that combines OW and ODSP delivered by municipalities.
Do you think this is healthy public policy?
