One year into the Health Care Action Plan

A year after the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care Deb Matthews announced her health care action plan, we've seen some changes and announcements. Health Links, which many AOHC members are already involved in as early adopters, is a prime example. And so is the seniors strategy announced in the last month.

Yesterday, to mark the first anniversary of the action plan, the Minister addressed the Canadian Club with a progress report.  AOHC attended the Canadian Club event and took note that in her speech, Minister Matthews identified three challenges the action plan needs to address: the fiscal challenge, the demographic (aging) challenge and the quality challenges. AOHC is concerned there is an important fourth challenge that was not mentioned in Minister Matthew's Canadian Club speech and that is not  emphasized enough in the Action Plan documents we've seen thus far.  That fourth challenge is health equity -the critically important imperative to reduce health disparities and inequities in Ontario.

In coming days, watch for more health equity advocacy. In the meantime, here's an article on health equity AOHC Executive Director Adrianna Tetley posted a few weeks ago.

Creating awareness and building capacity: Working with LGBTQ+ newcomers - January 22

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and/or questioning newcomers are an integral though often invisible part of immigrant, refugee and LGBTQ+ communities. Experiencing marginalization within cultural communities and mainstream LGBTQ+ communities often leaves individuals feeling that there are few options for obtaining services.

Recognizing that good practices already exist in the sector, this event will bring together service providers from agencies and organizations from across the GTA with the aim of sharing resources and increase our capacity to more effectively serve LGBTQ+ newcomers.

Time: 1:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
