Report on Ontario's Poverty Reduction Strategy

As required under the Poverty Reduction Act, the government released this report on December 4th noting that 40,000 children have been lifted out of poverty since 2008. The report commits to developing a new Poverty Reduction Strategy in 2013 with specific targets to reduce poverty over the next 5 years.

Further changes to IFH coverage

In December the federal Minister of Immigration announced a list of 27 countries considered 'Designated Countries of Origin' (DCO). Refugee claimants from these countries will be eligible for health services only if their condition is considered a risk to public health.

Successful advocacy: New funding to municipalities to help cushion the cuts to CSUMB

Thanks to community advocates - including many voices from AOHC members - the Ontario Government announced on December 27th it will provide one-time funding to municipalities of $42million for homelessness prevention programs. The funding is prioritized for people on social assistance to support many of the same housing crisis prevention initiatives that the Community Start Up & Maintenance Benefit (CUSMB) supported. Collective advocacy DOES make a difference - so let's keep meeting, emailing, tweeting, and writing our politicians to keep poverty eradication on the agenda.
