The health impacts of planned cuts to Community Start Up & Maintenance Benefit (CSUMB)

Following up on an idea from Bridges CHC Health Promoter Lori Kleinsmith, a new report has been released that outlines the health impacts of the planned cuts to the CSUMB. The Wellesley Institute, AOHC, and the Income Security Advocacy Centre, along with ACTO, Street Health, and the Peterborough County-City Health Unit, have partnered to produce the report, "The Real Cost of Cutting the Community Start-Up and Maintenance Benefit: A Health Equity Impact Assessment."

Tips on how to access CSUMB for your clients

The government is cutting this benefit for people on social assistance as of January 1, 2013. CSUMB provides up to $799 over a 2 year period and can be used for housing issues such as: deposits and hook-up fees for utilities; last month's rent deposit; moving costs; rent arrears to prevent eviction.
