Social Assistance Review Report

Social assistance reform report and AOHC response The long-awaited report of the Commission for the Review of Social Assistance in Ontario was released October 24. In all, the report includes 108 recommendations.
AOHC supports the proposals to: make employment services more effective, to change rules to allow people to keep more of their assets and earnings, and for parents to retain part of their child support. The report recommends that the single adult Ontario Works rate be increased by $100/month as a downpayment on adequacy, funded partly by the elimination of the Special Diet Allowance.
However, the longer-term recommendations to: integrate OW and ODSP into one social assistance program delivered by municipalities, streamline 30 special benefits and bring in a new disability supplement, need further analysis and consultation with the people who would be affected.
