Canadian Index of Wellbeing report calls for CHC network across Canada

The Association of Ontario Health Centres is calling on the provincial government to act on the Canadian Index of Wellbeing's (CIW) recommendation and create a comprehensive network of Community Health Centres (CHCs). In a report released October 23, the CIW said that expanding access to CHCs would have long-term health benefits for Canadians and reduce health disparities.

Social Assistance Review Report

Social assistance reform report and AOHC response The long-awaited report of the Commission for the Review of Social Assistance in Ontario was released October 24. In all, the report includes 108 recommendations.

AOHC supports the proposals to: make employment services more effective, to change rules to allow people to keep more of their assets and earnings, and for parents to retain part of their child support. The report recommends that the single adult Ontario Works rate be increased by $100/month as a downpayment on adequacy, funded partly by the elimination of the Special Diet Allowance.

However, the longer-term recommendations to: integrate OW and ODSP into one social assistance program delivered by municipalities, streamline 30 special benefits and bring in a new disability supplement, need further analysis and consultation with the people who would be affected.

Healthy Kids Panel seeking parents' help with survey

AOHC recently presented recommendations to the Ontario government's Healthy Kids Panel which is developing a strategy to address childhood obesity. They are asking to hear from parents and caregivers with children under the age of 18 to get a better understanding of their knowledge and perceptions of childhood obesity.

Please help by completing the survey (if you're a parent with child under 18) or circulating the survey for completion by November 12.
