Cuban Cigar Newsletter July 2015

This is as close as I will ever come to a confessional.  I am lazy, yet a workaholic at the same time.  Sounds strange I know, but bear with me here.

I spend a lot of time on a computer, doing website work, answering emails, processing cigar selections for clients and the like.  I spend too much time watching netflix in the evening (the lazy part) and neither one of these activities is conducive to relaxation and enjoyment.  Work keeps you occupied and television is really bubble gum for the brain. Nothing relaxing about either one really.

The missing part is time spent outdoors enjoying a nice Cuban cigar while the weather is nice.  I admit we have had a heat wave and 92f (33c) is a little warm to have a stogie outside. Still, the evenings cool down and I should be out there relaxing and unwinding with a Cuban cigar.

Life will always be busy and stressful.  No way to avoid that with the world changing and coming at us faster and faster.  We can only control our own environment and I want that time to clear my mind, let go of stress and savor a fine Cuban cigar.

Now, sure I want all our customers to do the same, after all it is my business, but maybe your downtime is messed up as well and making time for that cigar is the answer for you too.

Maybe it is time with family, reading, golfing, playing tiddly winks, who knows. ( I just showed my age there, I wonder if anyone even knows what tiddly winks are these days, ha ) I had a business associate that carved beautiful wooden falcons for a hobby and that was his decompression method to avoid stress or at least reduce it.

Regardless of the method, there is no stopping the world, problems and challenges will always come up each week.  What we can control are the little things, like if your going to be lazy why not do it with a fine Cuban cigar and a book, or a hobby.

So I am committing myself to spend that time with a cigar while summer is here and the weather allows for it.  I will try harder to plan my evenings.  Dinners can be planned around my Cuban cigar choices or vice versa, as long as I reserve a little time for myself and my thoughts.

I hope you get to do the same this summer. I will try and help you out, check the TEN PACK DEAL this month.

ALL ten are Partagas Series D No 4, a Smok'in Deal if ever there was one.  Check it!

   The Top Shelf! Cuban montecristo

Each month we will focus our attention on a "Top Shelf" Cuban cigar.  There are so many to choose from, with several that stand out among even the fine Cuban Cigar lineas.

Montecristo No 2 torpedo

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Montecristo No 2 is often refered to as Cuba's "Flagship" cigar.  The one all others are compared to when discussing Cuban cigars.
I personally think the costly Cohiba Esplendido deserves this title, but the Monte No 2 is not far behind in my books.
cuban montecristo no 2 torpedo What I can say about this Top Shelf Cuban is that it seldom lets you down.  It is the cigar I reach for when I am unsure what to smoke. It is a true medium 5/10 strength and the flavors are very traditional Cuban.
Coffee notes with slight mocha hints.  Lots of light wood and leather indications that pair well with bourbon and whiskey quite well.
Here is what Habanos have to say about the Montecristo brand.
Montecristo is the best known and probably the most appreciated brand of Habanos throughout the world. It forms the benchmark for many Habanos smokers against which other brands are judged.
The name comes from the hero of Alexandre Dumas' famous novel "The Count of Montecristo", which was a firm favourite amongst the Torcedores ( Cigar Makers) at the factory in Havana where it was founded in 1935.
Today the range, which was originally composed of a narrow assortment strictly numbered from 1 to 5, covers every level of  the cigar enthusiasts' needs from the majestic Montecristo A to the tiny Joyita.
Montecristo's perfectly balanced blend is created exclusively with selected leaves from the Vuelta Abajo region, home of the finest tobaccos in the world. Its distinctive medium to full flavour and distinguished aroma appeal equally to both new and experienced smokers.
All Montecristo sizes are now and always have been "totalmente a mano, tripa larga" -totally hand made, long filler.
Personal notes:
I find the Montecristo No 2 torpedo to be, well,... delicious in it's entirety.  Just a really good overall Cuban cigar that is well deserved of Top Shelf Status.
The flavors are forward and present to a newer palette and yet the seasoned Cuban cigar lover will find depths of flavor to please them as well.
I highly recommend this cigar, always have & always will. They also age very well, with an approx 20% improvement in flavors and complexity after one year, in my humble opinion.
 Cuban Cigars with Extra Age
It has been pointed out we did not show the Romeo pyramide Anejados, nor were they posted on our website so you could buy a few.  Both are there now, and you can buy singles as well as boxes of 25, sorry.
Habanos' new program called Aejados (which translates to "aged"), now offers two different vitola in cigar sizes the brand has never seen before now.  Each box is aged in Cuba for a period of five to eight years
before going out to the retail market.
The Aejados program has two unique sizes - a Montecristo Churchill (7 inches by 47 ring) and a Romeo y Julieta Pirmide (6 1/8 by 52).
Ths is not just aging of leaves, as Habanos often does, this refers to the age of the fully rolled cigar itself aged in the same box we send to you if you select the faster shipping method.
Gordon Mott's, Cigar Aficionado Magazine article excerpt refering to the tasting of the two available Anejados cigars.
"The Pirmides was a full-flavored smoke, with some deep notes of spiciness and earth, and a long finish. Although it already has a lot of box age, this cigar will continue to evolve and shows good aging potential.
The Montecristo Aejado Churchill ended up being the favorite of the 40 people in the room. It presented a classic Montecristo flavor, elegant and refined with a solid core of light earthiness and coffee notes on the palate. It performed flawlessly, holding a long ash on a perfect draw. This cigar has tremendous aging potential, and will only continue to get better."
Just joking...
Two redneck guys get pulled over while drinking and driving.
The driver tells his friend "Peel the labels off these beer bottles, and we'll each stick one on our forehead. Now, shove all of the bottles under the front seat. Just let me do all the talking".
The cop walks up and shines his flashlight into the car. "Have you been drinking?" he asks. "No, sir" the drunk answers. "We haven't had a thing to drink tonight". "Then what on earth are those beer labels doing on your foreheads?"
"We're both alcoholics" says the drunk. "We're on the patch".
A first-grade teacher, Ms Brooks, was having trouble with one of her students.
The teacher asked "Harry, what's your problem?" Harry answered "I'm too smart for the 1st grade. My sister is in the 3rd grade and I'm smarter than she is! I think I should be in the 3rd grade too!"
Ms. Brooks had enough. She took Harry to the principal's office. While Harry waited in the outer office, the teacher explained to the principal what the situation was. The principal told Ms. Brooks he would give the boy a test. If he failed to answer any of his questions he was to go back to the 1st grade and behave. She agreed.
Harry was brought in and the conditions were explained to him and he agreed to take the test.
Principal: "What is 3 x 3?"
Harry: "9".
Principal: "What is 6 x 6?"
Harry: "36".
And so it went with every question the principal thought a 3rd grader should know. The principal looks at Ms. Brooks and tells her "I think Harry can go to the 3rd grade"
Ms. Brooks says to the principal "Let me ask him some questions". The principal and Harry both agreed.
Ms. Brooks asks "What does a cow have four of that I have only two of?"
Harry, after a moment: "Legs..."
Ms Brooks: "What is in your pants that you have but I do not have?"
The principal wondered why she would ask such a question!
Harry replied: "Pockets".
Ms. Brooks: "What does a dog do that a man steps into?"
Harry: "Pants".
The principal sat forward with his mouth hanging open.
Ms. Brooks: "What goes in hard and pink then comes out soft and sticky?" The principal's eyes opened really wide and before he could stop the answer, Harry replied "Bubble gum". Ms.
Brooks: "What does a man do standing up, a woman does sitting down and a dog does on three legs?" Harry: "Shake hands".
The principal was trembling.
Ms. Brooks: "What word starts with an "F" and ends in "K" that means a lot of heat and excitement?" Harry: "Firetruck".
The principal breathed a sigh of relief and told the teacher "Put Harry in the fifth-grade, I got the last seven questions wrong..."
My neighbor was working in his yard when he was startled by a late model car that came crashing through his hedge and ended up in his front lawn.
He rushed to help an elderly lady driver out of the car and sat her down on a lawn chair.
He said with excitement "You appear quite elderly to be driving". "Well, yes, I am" she replied proudly. "I'll be 97 next month, and I am now old enough that I don't even need a driver's license anymore".
"You don't need a driver's license anymore?!?" "That's right! The last time I went to my doctor, he examined me and asked if I had a driver's license. I told him 'yes' and handed it to him.
He took scissors out of the drawer, cut the license into pieces, and threw them in the waste basket, saying, 'You won't need this anymore' so I thanked him and left!"
