I love and hate this time of year. In our part of Canada, if you don't pay attention, you will miss spring as a season. It lasts about two weeks and can be below zero in the morning and perfect weather for a cigar on the deck by the evening.
Don't believe me? This was  7am the other day and we grilled dinner than evening and I had a cigar on the patio after dinner.
People lose their winter coats when they wear them for the freezing morning, but only need a T-shirt on the way home because of how hot and sunny it is later.
Still, we are approaching the true outdoor seaon. Sprucing up the yard, adding those hanging baskets and flowers to the garden etc.. This is when I start trying to get out of staining the deck this year. Managed to avoid it for three years now, so I expect this will be the year to do it. Maybe if I supply the Cubans and the beer, I can wrangle some buddies to assist.

The Top Shelf
Each month we will focus our attention on a "Top Shelf" Cuban cigar. There are so many to choose from, with several that stand out amongst even the fine Cuban Cigar lineas.
 One such cigar is the Cohiba Esplendido. If you want to be smoking one of the finest cigars in the world, this is your vitola. Forget the famous history of the churchill size, 7" x 47 ring and you still have an experience to rival any in memory.
Recently Cigar Aficionado Magazine released their Top 25 cigars of 2014 and the Cohiba Esplendido was placed at No 11 with the following write up.

Cohiba Esplendido
The Cohiba brand is one of the best-known cigar brands in the world, and the big, stately Esplendido is one of its most familiar sizes. Created in 1989 as  part of the L�nea Cl�sica series (along with the chunky Robusto and diminutive Exquisito), The Churchill-sized smoke packs a considerable punch, and at its best it showcases a level of power and complexity that is hard to find anywhere else. Recent production Cohiba Esplendidos show off rich, full-bodied flavors, such as salted caramel, black cherry and baked apple. The cigars, which were once made only at the small El Laguito Factory, are now so popular that they are produced in many factories, making consistent performance somewhat of a problem.

The reference to the performance may refer to draw problems with virtually all churchill size cigars from Cuba. For many years I steered clients away from the 7 x 47 due to draw issues, but Cuba has done a good job addressing draw and other quality control concerns the last several years. While larger rings often promise bigger draw, the balance of the length and ring of the Esplendido gives the smoker an elegant experience and I have found draw and other quality issues greatly reduced.
My true complaint about the Esplendido is the cost. These Top Shelf Cuban Cohiba are expensive, even when compared to say the H Upmann Sir Winston, also a churchill size. Both come in amazing varnished presentation boxes, but Cohiba uses two year aged tobacco vs one year and charge a premium for this and for their brand name itself.
Still, when only the finest Cigars will do, this is one Top Shelf Cuban that will not dissapoint and will impress even the most jaded or cynical guest or associate. It delivers on flavor, balance in the hand, appearence and overall amazing Cuban cigar experience. Truly one of my dessert island cigars.
I admit, you will likely have to be extremely successful and have a passion for the finest things in life to purchase a box of these cigars. They are not for the faint of heart, but your humidor should hold at least a few of these for that truly special occasion where only the Top Shelf will do the trick!

The rich smoke of this beautiful Churchill layers the palate with profoundly sophisticated notes of salted caramel, black cherry and baked apple. Full bodied and elegant.
Past and Current Cigar Aficonado Magazine Ratings for the Cohiba Esplendido have been consistently high scores, reaching 94 in both 2007 and 2014. All ratings since 2007 are 92 or higher.

A hidden Cuban Treasure that will be gone soon!
LE 2009
It likely deserved more fanfare for being large in f lavors, but it was milder than most Cuban LEs and lacking in character.
Now six years later the speed of sale is increasing, and for good reason. The Magnum 48 LE 2009 has aged well and matured to offer refined flavor. The earth and pepper tones have been replaced by more complex herbal notes, some burnt wood and leather, all combined with a finish that seems to pair well with the deeper red wines and darker spirits.
I feel it is a hidden treasure and since the production was all made before 2009. Stock will be gone before we know it. I will try and get it into our monthly Cuban cigar club one more time and if you enjoyed one in the past, I suggest stocking up while you can. Everyone has a different palette,so your mileage may vary, but if you don't mind the petit robusto size, I would suggest this as a must have for your humidor.

The Quicky
The only way to pull off a Sunday afternoon 'quickie' with their 8-year old son in the apartment was to send him out on the balcony with a Popsicle and tell him to report on all the neighborhood activities.
He began his commentary as his parents put their plan into operation: 'There's a car being towed from the parking lot,' he shouted. 'An ambulance just drove by!'
'Looks like the Andersons have company,' he called out.
'Matt's riding a new bike!' 'Looks like the Sanders are moving!'
'Jason is on his skate board!'
After a few moments he announced, 'The Coopers are having sex.' Startled, his mother and dad shot up in bed! Dad cautiously called out, 'How do you know they're having sex?'
'Jimmy Cooper is standing on his balcony with a Popsicle.'

How to solve an
old guys problems?
After being married for 40 years, I took a careful look at my wife one day and said to her, "Forty years ago we had a cheap house, a junk car, slept on a sofa bed and watched a 10-inch black and white TV, but I got to sleep every night with a hot 23-year-old girl.
Now ... I have a $500,000.00 home, a $35,000.00 car, a nice big bed and a large screen TV, but I'm sleeping with a 63-year-old woman. It seems to me that you're not holding up your side of things."
My wife is a very reasonable woman. She told me to go out and find a hot 23-year-old girl and she would make sure that I would once again be living in a cheap house, driving a junk car, sleeping on a sofa bed and watching a 10-inch black and white TV.
Aren't older women great?

A man was sitting on the edge of the bed, watching his wife, who was looking at herself in the mirror. Since her birthday was not far off he asked what she'd like to have for a present.
"I'd like to be eight again" she replied, still looking in the mirror.
On the morning of her birthday, he arose early, made her a nice big bowl of Coco Pops, and then took her to a theme park. What a day! He put her on every ride in the park - the Death Slide, the Wall of Fear, the Screaming Roller Coaster, everything there was.
Five hours later they staggered out of the theme park. Her head was reeling and her stomach felt upside down. He then took her to a McDonald's where he ordered her a Happy Meal with extra fries and a chocolate shake.
Then it was off to a movie, popcorn, a soda pop, and huge bag of M&M's. What a fabulous adventure!
Finally she wobbled home with her husband and collapsed into bed exhausted. He leaned over his wife with a big smile and lovingly asked "Well Dear, what was it like being eight again?" Her eyes slowly opened and her expression suddenly changed. "I meant my dress size, you idiot!!"
The moral of the story: even when a man is listening, he's gonna get it wrong.

Haircut, Cuban cigar & a Shave
A high ranking General and an old Drill Sergeant were both sitting in a barber shop getting a shave after their haircuts and enjoying a couple of Cuban cigars the Barber had kindly offered them.
As one barber was getting ready to slap some fragrant aftershave on the General, the officer stopped him saying, "Don't put that stuff on me. My wife will smell it and think I've been in a brothel!"
The other Barber finished with the Sergeant but seemed hesitant to apply the aftershave after what he heard.
The Sergeant only smirked with his Cuban cigar still in his mouth and leaned back in his chair, "Go ahead, buddy. My wife doesn't know what the inside of a brothel smells like." |
