Greetings!

May your blessings outnumber
The shamrocks that grow,
And may trouble avoid you
Wherever you
go.

Happy St Patrick's Day
March 17th, 2015

I wrote this story last year for the newsletter, but I think it is worth repeating.  Teachers mold young minds and teach children critical thinking and that is great.  Teachers are also expected to foster imagination and creativity and this story is one example.

I have enormous respect for my wife and her profession. When adults are successful later in life and attribute much of their success to a Teacher, they are talking about outstanding Teachers like my wife.

My wife is a grade one Teacher.  She seems to always be taking strange stuff to school for arts and crafts, math games and the like.  Then a week ago I see on the counter a box of Lucky Charms cereal, of all things.  Now even as a kid I did not like the idea of all that color in one bowl, let alone the sugar and the marshmallow, so I asked what the heck we would want that for.

Her reply was quiet and softly to say "they're not for you, ya twit"  we need them at school.  I said all I ever hear is how you promote healthy eating to your students and you even insist on fruits and veggies for their treats at Christmas!  Now you give them these horrid things, wow!

Her response, again quiet and subdued, was.. "They are the bait, my students are making Leprechaun Traps for St Patrick's Day. I swear she mumbled "you idiot" at the end, but she would not admit to it.

What a fun and simple idea for a bunch of 7 year olds to learn about building things.  I wish I had a Teacher as dedicated when I was a wee lad! Turns out she then sneaks in early and removes the  "bait" replacing it with little golden chocolate coins and notes saying things like "nice try" and "just missed me, here's a bit from me pot of gold" and so on.  Story is a little mushy for a cigar guy newsletter I know, but I am proud of Margo and admire her dedication and fun attitude towards learning.

So I know there is no such thing as a "jinx" but I tread carefully anyway when I say we have had two weeks of the finest March weather we have ever had in Calgary.  I know the East coast has suffered a mighty winter so far an it may not be over, but we are seeing amazing warm temps and we even enjoyed a drink and cigar on the deck the other day.  Now I hope that Mother Nature does not punish me for such praise during winter.  The forecast calls for another ten days of good weather and we can only hope I did not just "jinx" our chance at an early Spring Season.

  St Patrick's Day Celebrations!

During and following the great potato famine of 1846, some 4,000,000 Irish left their country. About 90% of them came to the New World to start a new life, bringing St. Patrick along.

In the U.S., it is primarily a festive day filled with good cheer, parades, the "wearing of the green," shamrocks, and song. We all celebrate the day right along with the Irish, though not with quite the same fervor and tradition!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Every year since 1962, the Chicago River has been dyed green for St. Patrick's day.
The actual dye is orange. It turns green when it's churned into the water. The discovery of this phenomenon was made by members of Chicago's
pipefitters union back in 1962, and the union has been dyeing the river for St. Pat's ever since.
The natural green river can be seen to the right, awaiting its transformation into the hypergreen to the left.
In 1962, over 100 pounds of dye were dumped into the river, leaving it green for days. Now, only 40 pounds are dispersed, but because the River was reversed to run backwards away from the lake, even one day later, the entire river for many blocks to the west remains a shamrock-colored fairway.
Cuban Cigar Review
Partagas
Serie P No 2
Torpedo size 6 1/8 x 52
reviewed by  D Fraser.
This torpedo is sort of the  rebellious cousin of the Monte No 2 torpedo.  Stronger & bolder, and  a little abrasive.  Attractive and dark with some mystery, this cigar got all the girls attention when they were growing up together. Bit of a bad boy!
Now as a big (and still bad) boy, this Partagas offers bold flavors, strength to spare and some very dark rich espresso notes.  Some slight pepper can be found in most Partagas and this is no exception.  Black fresh ground pepper undertones that would suit a rib eye steak on the grill.
A bit of charcoal near the last bit as the strength increased throughout the cigar, but also a sort of burnt leather and even burnt orange peel came through in the finish.
Many say they get chocolate and other flavors.  If chocolate is represented in the flavors it would be considered a very dark chocolate or even Mexican chocolate note in my view. Matches well with a dark beer and while not my preference for a beverage I can see it pairing with a Stout beer as  well.
So for those with a palette and taste for the darker stronger side Cubans, this is am amazing choice. Resting for about 6 months improves the flavors and reduces the acidity a little.
My overall rating is 92/100.
CA Magazines most recent rating was a  91/100 June 2013
to toast
St Patrick's Day
A Bushmills 18 yo and a Montecristo from Cuba pair very well together and would make your toast that wee bit more special!
Work is the curse of the drinking class.
 --Oscar Wilde
May you live to be a hundred years,
With one extra year to repent.
As you slide down the banister of life, May the splinters never point in the wrong direction!
May the wind at your back always be your own.
 Here's to a long life & a merry one.
A quick death and an easy one.
A pretty girl and an honest one.
A cold beer-and another one!
Dance as if no one were watching,
Sing as if no one were listening,
And live everyday as if it were your last.
May your glass be ever full.
May the roof over your head be always strong.
And may you be in heaven half an hour before the devil knows you're gone!
A toast to your coffin.
May it be made of 100 year old oak.
And may we plant the tree together, tomorrow.
To Ireland!
A man stumbles up to the only other patron in a bar and asks if he could buy him a drink.
Why of course," comes the reply.
The first man then asks: "Where are you from?"
"I'm from Ireland," replies the second man.
The first man responds: "You don't say, I'm from Ireland too! Let's have another round to Ireland."
"Of Course," replies the second man.
Curious, the first man then asks: "Where in Ireland are you from?"
"Dublin," comes the reply.
"I can't believe it," says the first man.
"I'm from Dublin too! Let's have another drink to Dublin."
"Of course," replies the second man.
Curiosity again strikes and the first man asks:
"What school did you go to?"
"Saint Mary's," replies the second man. "I graduated in '62."
"This is unbelievable!" the first man says.
"I went to Saint Mary's and I graduated in '62, too!"
About that time in comes one of the regulars and sits down at the bar.
"What's been going on?" he asks the bartender
"Nothing much," replies the bartender. "The O'Malley twins are drunk again."
Paddy on
St Patrick's Day
Paddy had been drinking at his local Dublin pub all day and most of the night celebrating St Patrick's Day. Mick, the bartender says, "You'll not be drinking anymore tonight Paddy!" Paddy replies, "OK Mick, I'll be on my way then."
Paddy spins around on his stool and steps off. He falls flat on his face. "Shoite!" he says and pulls himself up by the stool and dusts himself off. He takes a step towards the door and falls flat on his face, "Shoite, Shoite!" He looks to the doorway and thinks to himself that if he can just get to the door and some fresh air he'll be fine.
He belly crawls to the door and shimmies up to the door frame. He sticks his head outside and takes a deep Breath of fresh air, feels much better and takes a step out onto the sidewalk and falls flat on his face. "Bi' Jasus... I'm fockin' focked," he says.
He can see his house just a few doors down, and crawls to the door, hauls himself up the door frame, opens the door and shimmies inside. He takes a look up the stairs and says "No fockin" way". He crawls up the stairs to his bedroom door and says "I can make it to the bed." He takes a step into the room and falls flat on his face. He says "Fock it" and falls into bed.
The next morning, his wife, Jess, comes into the room carrying a cup of coffee and says, "Get up Paddy. Did you have a wee bit too much to drink last night?". Paddy says, "I did Jess. I was fockin" pissed. But how'd you know?"
"Mick phoned... you left your wheelchair at the pub."
