The Masters Tournament is finally here. April 9th to 13th, 2014. The legendary Augusta National is steeped with tradition and controversy. Still the finest looking course, the most coveted trophy in the sport and the most sought after victory in the game. Some years the veterans of golf surge to the lead, yet other times a young player with a hot hand comes out of nowhere to get a green jacket.

The PGA golf event of the year. The quest for the green jacket motivates pro golfers to reach for greatness.
Possibly the finest golf course in the world. Augusta National Golf Club opened in December of 1932, although the formal grand opening didn't take place until January of 1933. Land for the club had been purchased and construction begun in 1931.
HISTORY of the MASTERS Looking to provide a service to golf by hosting a tournament, Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts decided to hold an annual event beginning in 1934. The final decision was made at a meeting in New York at the office of member W. Alton Jones. Roberts proposed the event be called the Masters Tournament, but Bobby Jones objected thinking it too presumptuous. The name Augusta National Invitation Tournament was adopted and the title was used for five years until 1939 when Jones relented and the name was officially changed. An early decision was whether Jones would play or serve as an official. Jones preferred not to compete but was persuaded by the Club's members to join the field. In the 12 Tournaments that Jones played, his best finish was 13th in 1934.
Many decisions made in the early days of the Tournament remain today. Among these are the four-day stroke playing of 18 holes each day instead of the then customary 36 holes on the third day, eliminating qualifying rounds, and denying permission for anyone except the player and caddie to be in the playing area. A complimentary pairing sheet and a spectator booklet were provided, and commercialization in any form of the Tournament was limited.
The first Tournament was held March 22, 1934, and beginning in 1940, the Masters was scheduled each year during the first full week in April. That first Tournament was won by Horton Smith, and in the Fall of 1934 the nines were reversed. In 1935 Gene Sarazen hit "the shot heard 'round the world" scoring a double eagle on the par 5 15th hole, tying Craig Wood and forcing a playoff. Sarazen won the 36-hole playoff the following day by five strokes. In 1942 Byron Nelson defeated Ben Hogan 69-70 in an 18-hole playoff and the Tournament was not played the following three years, 1943, 1944 and 1945, during the war. To assist the war effort, cattle and turkeys were raised on the Augusta National grounds.
The 1950's included two victories by Ben Hogan, and the first of four for Arnold Palmer. Palmer's 1958 win began the tradition of Amen Corner. In 1960 the Par 3 Contest was begun, and in 1965-1966 Jack Nicklaus became the first Masters champion to defend his title successfully. During the decade of the 1970's the two founders of the Masters Tournament passed away. Both Jones and Roberts left indelible impressions on the Masters and on the world of golf. The following decade Spaniard Seve Ballesteros won twice and Tom Watson captured his second title. In 1986 at age 46, Nicklaus donned his sixth Green Jacket. And in 1997, Tiger Woods broke the Tournament four-day scoring record that had stood for 32 years. At the 2001 Masters, Woods won his fourth consecutive professional major, and in 2002 became only the third player to win consecutive Masters titles. In 2005 he became the third person to win at least four Tournaments.
Masters Trivia
The best final round score by a winner was 64 by Gary Player in 1978.
Tournament or "Series" badges have been sold out since 1966.
COMEBACK
In 1996, Nick Faldo started the final round six strokes behind leader Greg Norman, but won the Tournament by five.
Does the winner get to keep the Masters Champion Green Jacket?
The Masters champion gets to take the Green Jacket home with him and keep it for a year. When he returns to Augusta National the following year, he returns the jacket to the club. From that point on, the champion has "visitation rights" to his Green Jacket. The jacket is considered his, and when he visits Augusta National at any point thereafter, he can retrieve and wear his jacket. |

CIGAR REVIEWS

Cuban Cigar Review
Ramon Allones Specially Select
4 7/8 x 50 ring
robusto
A nice mild side cigar for the afternoon or evening. Toasty flavors with a distinct dry walnut sensation to the finish. This cigar never lacks character an flavor despite it's mildness.
The box press style is well made and the wrappers are often very oily and rich oak in color.
I would suggest this is a must have for any well stocked humidor and now that warm days are upon us, one to reach for mid afternoon accompanied by a nice cold brew.
My rating on this cigar is 92/100 DF
CA Magazine rating for this cigar is a 91 on Oct of 2013 |

Just joking...
Your Chuckle for today

"Golf is very much like a love affair, if you don't take it seriously, it's no fun, if you do, it breaks your heart. Don't break your heart, but flirt with the possibility." Louise Suggs
"It took me seventeen years to get 3,000 hits in baseball. I did it in one afternoon on the golf course." Hank Aaron
"I play in the low 80's. If it's any hotter than that, I won't play." Joe E. Louis
I'm working as hard as I can to get my life and my cash to run out at the same time. If I can just die after lunch Tuesday, everything would be perfect." Doug Sanders, former professional golfer
"One of the reasons Arnie Palmer is playing so well is that, before each tee-shot, his wife takes out his balls and kisses them"-TV commentator
Always throw clubs ahead of you; that way you don't waste energy going back to pick them up" - Tommy Bolt
"Have you ever noticed what golf spells backwards?" - Al Boliska

"I don't think television work has screwed up my golf. I've pretty much taken care of that on my own" - Curtis Strange
"The hardest shot in golf is the 90-yard wedge, where the ball has to be played off a tree, bounce back into a bunker, hit a stone, bounce onto the green, roll to the cup, hit the pin and drop in the hole. That shot is so tough I've only made it once" - Zeppo Marx
Little Johnny burst through the front door with a smile on his face. Surprised that Johnny was home so early, his mother asked "Why are you home from school so early?" Johnny answered "I was the only one who could answer a question". "Oh, really? What was the question?" his mother asked. "Who threw the eraser at the teacher?"

A dedicated Teamsters union worker was attending a convention in Las Vegas and decided to check out the local brothels.
When he got to the first one, he asked the Madam "Is this a union house?" "No" she replied "I'm sorry it isn't". "Well, if I pay you $100, what cut do the girls get?" The house gets $80 and the girls get $20" she answered.
Offended at such unfair dealings, the union man stomped off down the street in search of a more equitable, hopefully unionized shop. His search continued until finally he reached a brothel where the Madam responded "Why yes sir, this is a union house. We observe all union rules".
The man asked "And, if I pay you $100, what cut do the girls get?" "The girls get $80 and the house gets $20". "That's more like it!" the union man said.
He handed the Madam $100, looked around the room, and pointed to a stunningly attractive green-eyed blonde. "I'd like her" he said.
"I'm sure you would, sir" said the Madam. Then she gestured to a 92-year old woman in the corner "but Ethel here has 67 years seniority and according to union rules, she's next!"

These three old girls and their dogs were sitting on a park bench having a quiet conversation when a flasher approached from across the park.
The flasher came up to the ladies, stood right in front of them and opened his trench coat. Gertrude immediately had a stroke. Then Maude also had a stroke. But Tillie, being older and feebler, couldn't reach that far.
