Cuban Cigar Newsletter October 2013
Serving our Cuban Cigar loving clients since 1993 |

Greetings!
Well, what a challenging summer we had this year. Most years my memory is of grilling on our deck, smoking fine Cuban cigars and continuing to fail in my attempts to make the perfect Margarita. The world and the weather chose other activities for us this year and we have come out the other end bruised but not broken.
We are now more determined than ever to make this coming Christmas Holiday one of the best we have ever had as a married couple. Reconnect with old friends and rekindle the relationships we have been forced to ignore a bit this year. Invite new neighbors in for a cup of grog and hopefully a cigar or two.
I hear some of you already saying, geez Fraser, what the heck are you mentioning Christmas for already. Too early. Well, really not too early this year. Canadian Thanksgiving is this weekend and the USA version is soon to follow. Also, since Xmas Day falls on a Tuesday, the last delivery day for parcels is the 20th. This year above all others, I suggest early ordering to have gifts and stock for your humidor to arrive on time for the Holiday Season.
We are always glad to be of service

IF you only read one article I have ever written in these newsletters, please make it this one. DF
In early July I wrote the following message after the Boston bombing occurred. It turns out those I was writing about were actually participating in the Marathon, though fortunately not in the vicinity when the incident happened.
They called me and agreed it would be a great idea to have an article about their tragedy and the help they can offer others (including those that suffered loss in Boston) as a result of losing their precious Samantha.
--------------------------------------------------------------
"The World can be a scary place. So many horrible things happening makes us all shake our heads in dismay. Depression and a feeling that all is lost can ensue, but so can optimism.
We have a client that suffered a horrific loss of a young daughter to the heinous actions of another and his family has chosen to see the light and bring good into the world by using their Daughter's name to help others, including others that have suffered a similar loss.
They raise money for various charities, they fund a special family camp, and they add children sections to libraries that cannot afford one. They choose to live life, enjoy every day as it comes their way and help the world be a better place.
In light of recent events in Boston, we can only hope the families of those victims are eventually affected in the same positive way and meantime all we can do is share their sorrow.
By the way, should my client wish to promote the charity causes in his Daughter's name in this newsletter, he will always be welcome to do so.
Regardless, my wife and I will be helping their cause again this year, as will Canadian Cigar Company." ----------------------------------------------------------------
LETTER REGARDING CAMP SAMANTHA
Darwin, You opened your April newsletter by stating "the world can be a scary place" following the tragedy at the Boston Marathon. Our family was touched to read your words about the hope and inspiration you have drawn from the work of a client and his family. Reading the words "the loss of a young daughter" made us sit down and reflect. Has it really been since 2004 that we lost Sam, her sister Nina, and their mom? Sometimes it feels like a lifetime ago yet other times it feels like yesterday.
Nine years ago our life changed dramatically when we learned that so much had been taken from us without warning or reason. The knock on our front door and an officer saying in slow motion that a crime had been committed. I was staring, trying to find words, answers, all while feeling this fog roll through my body...it was so surreal. I remember just getting in the car and driving to the scene convinced that this was not happening to us. Hoping to wake up from this horrible dream. And then praying that our oldest daughter Jessica, who was just twelve, would somehow manage to get through this.
Grief is a process. We have learned how important it is to have friends and family around us that protect you with a layer of love and compassion even when you think you don't want it. Without that our story could easily today be about how the horrific actions of one person had a lasting negative impact on the lives of those that were devastated....but it isn't. Our story could be about loss and regret but it isn't, it is about hope and giving. Our story could have been about sadness and despair and instead it is about inspiration. We learned that we are the lucky ones and that not everyone has the same circle as we are blessed with.
Because of that, we partnered with Stepping Stones of Hope to host an annual grief camp for families dealing with the loss of a child, sibling, spouse, parent or any loved one for that matter. Camp Samantha allows families to come to camp together yet be amongst their peers who are facing similar feelings. The power is in showing children that they are not alone and helping them, through organized and fun activities, see that life, while never the same, can be wonderful again. And the power is in showing parents how much their children will learn from them through this tragedy, teach them coping skills that allow them to process their grief, and finally give them insight as to how their child is grieving.
Stepping Stones of Hope and Camp Samantha is volunteer led and only through the generous support of our donors is this camp and others possible. Please go to the website below to learn more about Samantha, find the "Register" page where you can make a donation via Paypal, or go directly to SSOH to learn about how this organization is positively impacting families everyday.
We open every camp the same way, with me saying, "I am sorry you are here, I am sorry you are forced to deal with this loss, and you should know we have been here waiting for you" Regards, Clay and Christina
Thanks Clay and Christina, I was glad to hear you had reached out to those that suffered loss from the Boston incident and shocked to find out you were there.
I encourage all my clients to help out Camp Samantha through donation or other support if they can. . DF |

CIGAR REVIEWS
Cuban Cigar Review
Montecristo No 4
5 x 42 petit corona
reviewed by D Fraser
Montecristo is certainly one of the most famous and recognizable brands from Cuba. Also the most copied and mimicked by the non-cuban makers. Not sure if that is due to jealousy or flattery but it helps them sell cigars when they use the name or mimic the packaging.
The No 4 has been rumored to be the biggest single selling cigar in the world. It is a true medium for Cuban cigars and the one we use to measure all others. A box press is a nice cigar to hold and smoke, but it can be susceptive to draw problems for some reason.
When it does draw well it offers very traditional leathers, coffees and slight woody tones like most Montecristo vitolas do. Some slight nutty & dry tea notes to the finish round out a wonderful pleasing choice that I highly recommend.
Too small a diameter for you, try the next biggest seller from Cuba, the Montecristo No 2 torpedo.
My overall rating for this cigar is 91/100
CA Magazine's most recent rating was a 93/100 June 2013 |

Just joking...
Your Chuckle for today MY TRIP TO COSTCO
Yesterday I was at my local COSTCO buying a large bag of Purina dog chow for my loyal pet, Jake, the Wonder Dog. I was in the check-out line when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog. What did she think I had, an elephant? So because I'm retired and have little to do, on impulse I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, I was starting the Purina Diet again. I added that I probably shouldn't, because I ended up in the hospital last time, but that I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms. I told her that it was essentially a Perfect Diet and that the way that it works is, to load your pants pockets with Purina Nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete so it works well and I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in line was now enthralled with my story.) Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no, I stepped off a curb to sniff a poodle's butt and a car hit me. I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack he was laughing so hard. _________________________
Confession?
An elderly man walks into a confessional. The following conversation ensues:
Man: 'I am 92 years old, have a wonderful wife of 70 years, many children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Yesterday, I picked up two college girls, hitch-hiking. We went to a motel, where I had sex with each of them three times.'
Priest: 'Are you sorry for your sins?' Man: 'What sins?'
Priest: 'What kind of a Catholic are you?'
Man: 'I'm Jewish.'
Priest: 'Why are you telling me all this?'
Man: 'I'm 92 years old .... I'm telling everybody!'

Lemon Squeeze
I was in a restaurant yesterday when I suddenly realized I desperately needed to pass gas.
The music was really, really loud, so I nonchalantly timed my gas with the beat of the music.
After a couple of songs, I started to feel better and quite relieved, if you know what I mean.
I finished my coffee, and noticed that everybody was staring at me...
Then I suddenly remembered that I was listening to my iPod.
------------------------------------------
While going through the books, God notices a mistake in St. Peter's roster, so he calls Satan to have a word; "It seems you accidentally received some of my professionals down there: there's a teacher, a doctor and a farmer."
"Yeah," Satan replies. "All the more for me!"
God replies, "Well, you better send them up here immediately because they don't belong in hell."
Satan says, "No chance. I'm keeping them!"
God says, "Send them up here now, or I'll sue the horns right off you."
Satan laughs uproariously, "Yeah, right. And just where are YOU going to get a lawyer?"
-----------------------------------------
One day a little boy woke up and sat down at the kitchen table expecting breakfast. However, his mother told him that he couldn't have any breakfast until he finished his chores. So, a little annoyed, the boy decided to take it out to do his chores.
When he went to milk the cow, he kicked it. When he went to collect the eggs, he kicked a chicken and when he went to feed the pigs, he kicked a pig.
When the little boy eventually sits down, his mother gives him a bowl of dry cereal. "Where is the bacon, eggs and milk?" asks the little boy. His mother replies, "I saw you kick the cow, so you don't get any milk; I saw you kick a chicken so you don't get eggs; and I saw you kick a pig so you don't get any bacon!"
Just as she finishes saying this, the boy's father comes down the stairs and kicks the cat. The little boy looks up at his mother and asks, "Do you want to tell him, or should I?"
----------------------------------------------
There once was a religious young woman who went to Confession.
Upon entering the confessional, she said, 'Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned.'
The priest said, 'Confess your sins and be forgiven.'
The young woman said, 'Last night my boyfriend made mad passionate love to me seven times.'
The priest thought long and hard and then said, 'Squeeze seven lemons into a glass and then drink the juice.' The young woman asked, 'Will this cleanse me of my sins?'
The priest said, 'No, but it will wipe that smile off of your face.'
